Add an AI statement to your syllabus.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your syllabus should explain:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>whether generative AI use is <strong>prohibited, permitted, or expected<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>which kinds of AI assistance are acceptable;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>which uses are not acceptable; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how students should disclose or acknowledge permitted AI assistance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u25b6\ufe0f <strong>Learn more <\/strong>at<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/atl\/syllabus-design-statements\/\">the Office for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (ATL)\u2019s Syllabus Statements &amp; Design webpage<\/a>, specifically the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/atl\/syllabus-design-statements\/#ai-statements\">Recommended Syllabus Statements for Artificial Intelligence Use in Classes<\/a> section.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"define-what-ai-use\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Define what \u201cAI use\u201d means in your course.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider being explicit about common uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>In your course, can students use AI to\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>brainstorm ideas?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>develop an outline?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>explain concepts?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>revise grammar?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>locate possible sources?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>generate or debug code?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>summarize material?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>generate prose?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>generate images or other media?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>critique a draft?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A simple \u201cAI is allowed\u201d statement may not provide enough guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"include-expectations\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Include expectations on the assignment, too.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Course-wide guidance is important, but expectations may vary from one assignment to another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Consider This<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> For each assignment, ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What AI use is permitted here?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What AI use is not permitted here?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What must students disclose?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What work must represent the student&#8217;s independent thinking?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, post your expectations in multiple places where students are likely to notice it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examples include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your course\u2019s syllabus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brightspace<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assignment Instructions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rubric (when appropriate)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"explain-the-why\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Explain the \u201cwhy\u201d.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whenever possible, connect your AI expectations to the learning objectives in your course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Example Instructions:<strong><br><\/strong><em>\u201cThe purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your ability to develop and defend an original argument.
