Talk about AI expectations with your students.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discuss your AI guidance early in the semester, and <em>revisit it <\/em>before assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students should know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>what assistance is acceptable;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>what crosses the line;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>what to do when they are uncertain;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how AI assistance should be acknowledged; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>why these expectations matter in your discipline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simple message to reinforce with your students: When a student is in doubt they should ask <em>before<\/em> using the tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u25b6\ufe0f Download<\/strong> our customizable presentation deck on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1Jl0S53PAkDE2xApJIlYWP7dJu_rcQZGh\/edit?usp=sharing&amp;ouid=117076560243072518974&amp;rtpof=true&amp;sd=true\">AI Use Expectations<\/a>\u201d. It can be used to clarify your course priorities and present to your students about AI use expectations in your course.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"teach-students-how-to-disclose-ai-use\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Teach<\/strong> <strong>students how to disclose AI use.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If AI use is permitted, decide what transparency should look like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask your students to identify:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the AI tool used;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>what they used it for;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how substantially it contributed;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>which portions of the work were affected; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>what the student independently reviewed, revised, or verified.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The<strong> URI CYPHER Center\u2019s<\/strong> <strong>A0\u2013A5 AI Usage Marking system<\/strong> offers one way for students and instructors to communicate how AI contributed to an assignment. The marking system is intended to promote transparency\u2014not to detect AI use or determine misconduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u25b6\ufe0f<\/strong><strong>Learn more <\/strong>at <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/cypher\/ai-marking\/\"><em>CYPHER AI Usage Marking Guide<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"show-dont-just-tell\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Show your students, don\u2019t just tell them.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Provide examples from your discipline. General examples are provided for consideration below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Potential Permitted Use Examples:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI used ChatGPT to brainstorm possible research questions. From the output I received, I&nbsp;selected one, and based on my class notes I further developed the final question independently.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI used Copilot to identify possible errors in my code. I evaluated the suggestions and made the final changes myself.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Potential Not Permitted Example:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI generated the response with Claude and submitted the output as my own work, without reviewing it, when independent authorship was required.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"connect-aI-use-to-disciplinary-practice\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Also, see the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/atl\/ai-and-assessment\/\">AI and Assessment<\/a> guidance project for more information.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>drafts and checkpoints;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>brief reflections;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>annotated sources;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>problem-solving explanations;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>code walkthroughs;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>oral follow-up questions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>version history where appropriate;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>course-specific applications, such as in-person quizzes and exams.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These practices support learning first.
