Identify the expectation.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learning about a concern is a reason to examine the work and follow the appropriate process. However, evidence is needed to make a determination of misconduct.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, locate the written guidance that applied to the work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul id=\"block-5c271840-2ffe-4db8-9ce0-8ba501850477\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>syllabus;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>assignment instructions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brightspace materials;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>rubric;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>examination directions; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>other course communication.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>As the instructor ask yourself what course or assignment expectation(s) may has the student violated?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"gather-factual-information\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Gather factual information.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Preserve materials directly relevant to the suspected concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This may include:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul id=\"block-3c876d2e-a08f-45ae-8c13-0e805db3cd60\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the student&#8217;s original submission;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>assignment instructions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>relevant syllabus language;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>course records;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>source materials;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>relevant correspondence;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>drafts or process documentation already available through the course; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a concise explanation of what raised the concern.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Focus on <strong>observable evidence<\/strong>, not assumptions about how a student \u201cnormally\u201d writes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Notify-the-student-and-report-through-the-URI-process\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Notify the student and report it through the URI process.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">URI\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/studentconduct\/academic-honesty-procedures\/\">Academic Honesty Procedures<\/a> require faculty and instructors to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul id=\"block-6198db97-fea6-437f-84bf-13880d0db1d5\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Notify the student of the academic-honesty allegation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AND provide formal written notice to the Instructor\u2019s College Dean, the Student&#8217;s College Dean and the Dean of Student&#8217;s Office\/Office of Community Standards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u25b6\ufe0f Use URI\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cm.maxient.com\/reportingform.php?UnivofRhodeIsland&amp;layout_id=11\">Academic Misconduct reporting process<\/a> for faculty. <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/studentconduct\/\">The Office of Community Standards<\/a> then manages the institutional process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"know-the-possible-academic-outcomes\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Know the possible academic outcomes.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a student has been found responsible, URI identifies three instructor options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol id=\"block-4fb6e6b0-347d-41f9-a883-1bb156f97b2f\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>failing the student for the assignment;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>failing the student for the course, with authorization from the instructor\u2019s College Dean; and\/or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>requesting formal Student Conduct action, either instead of or in addition to a grade adjustment.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First offenses for which formal conduct action is not requested receive an official warning letter through the conduct system. Repeat infractions require conduct action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n<section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-notice-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-notice\" data-hash=\"70b2ae5f9288058dc8793e3a4c73988f\"><h1>About AI Detectors<\/h1>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An AI-detector score is <strong>not<\/strong> proof of misconduct. AI-detection systems <em>estimate<\/em> whether text may have been AI-generated. Their results should <strong>not<\/strong> be treated as definitive evidence of authorship.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, focus on:<br>\u2705the applicable course expectation,<br>\u2705the student&#8217;s submitted work,<br>\u2705directly observable inconsistencies or evidence, relevant course records, and<br>\u2705URI\u2019s established academic-honesty process.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What should I include in a report?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suggested faculty documentation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul id=\"block-00260d5c-815d-4dda-8f5b-a9c0455ccd3d\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Student&#8217;s name<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instructor&#8217;s name<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Course and section<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assignment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Description of the concern<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relevant syllabus\/assignment expectation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student&#8217;s submitted work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supporting factual evidence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relevant communication with the student<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instructor\u2019s finding (if there was academic dishonesty or not) and the subsequent grade sanction (0 on the assignment, 50% credit on the assignment, etc.)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student\u2019s response to the allegation (admitted it, honest mistake, confusion about the correct way to cite AI use, etc.)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other documentation requested by the Office of Community Standards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u25b6\ufe0f Learn More<\/strong> by downloading our guide on <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1AYPJlZd_QLIHjNgsVXjDP40fZFpbYmSm\/view?usp=sharing\">\u201cWhat to do When You Suspect an Academic Integrity Violation.\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"beyond-chatbots\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Beyond Chatbots: Potential Impacts of AI Agents<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Generative AI is evolving beyond tools that respond to individual prompts. <strong>AI agents<\/strong> can complete a series of actions on a user&#8217;s behalf, potentially including navigating websites, gathering information, completing tasks, and interacting with online platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instructors, this creates a new academic integrity challenge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The question may no longer be only <strong>\u201cDid a student use AI to create this assignment?\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increasingly, instructors may also need to consider <strong>\u201cWhat evidence do I have that the student meaningfully participated in the learning process?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>What does this mean for assessment of student learning in my course(s)?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than relying primarily on detecting unauthorized AI use, consider designing assessments that provide multiple opportunities to see students&#8217; thinking and learning develop over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider strategies such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Capture the process, not only the product.<\/strong> Ask students to submit drafts, notes, research decisions, revisions, or other evidence of how their work developed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Build in opportunities for explanation.<\/strong> Ask students to briefly explain, discuss, present, or defend important decisions they made in completing an assignment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Connect assignments to the course experience.<\/strong> Incorporate class discussions, course-specific examples, datasets, activities, or experiences that students need to engage with to complete the work successfully.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use smaller checkpoints.<\/strong> Break larger assignments into stages so instructors can observe student thinking and provide feedback throughout the process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Include reflection and metacognition.<\/strong> Ask students what they learned, what challenged them, what they changed, and how they know their final work meets the assignment&#8217;s goals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Be explicit about AI expectations.<\/strong> Clearly communicate when AI tools may or may not be used and what students should disclose about their use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choose one important assessment in your course and ask:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>If an AI agent could complete this entire assignment for a student, what evidence would I still have that the student achieved the learning outcomes?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Bottom Line<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>: <\/em><\/strong><em>Designing assessments that make student thinking and learning visible can help address both questions while keeping the focus on learning rather than surveillance.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.34%\"><a class=\"cl-button   prominent\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/atl\/academic-integrity-ai\/\" title=\"\">\u20ea academic integrity &amp; AI<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.34%\"><a class=\"cl-button   prominent\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/atl\/step-1-write-it\/\" title=\"\">STEP 1: write it<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\"><a class=\"cl-button   prominent\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/atl\/step-2-teach-it\/\" title=\"\">STEP 2: TEACH IT<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This page includes information about:&nbsp; 1.
