Scholarships and Awards for Students in the Department of Biological Sciences

Each year, the Department of Biological Sciences awards the following scholarships to selected students based on decisions made by a faculty committee. There is no formal application process. Students receiving these scholarships and awards will be notified by e-mail.

  • Professor Robert A. DeWolf Scholarship
  • Dodd Family Scholarship
  • Harold A. Riemenschneider Award
  • Brett Santoro Memorial Scholarship

Each Spring, the Department of Biological Sciences solicits applications for two scholarships and awards that recognize outstanding academic achievement  Application Deadline: March 31 of each year.

Elmer A. Palmatier Memorial Scholarship 

Eligibility: Major in BS Biological Sciences, BA Biology, or BS Marine Biology and an overall GPA > 3.0.

Required application materials include (1) a completed Application Cover Sheet, (2) an essay describing your academic achievements and biological interests, (3) current transcript (unofficial, from e-campus), and (4) at least one letter of recommendation from a faculty member. Submit the Application Cover Sheet, essay, and transcript as a single PDF file to Dr. Alison Roberts (aroberts@uri.edu), and ask a faculty member to send one letter of recommendation to Dr. Roberts by the deadline of March 31. Outstanding scholarship as reflected by the application materials, transcript, and letter of recommendation will be used as criteria for this award. In instances in which qualified applicants have very similar levels of achievement, preference will be given to students who have a strong interest in plant biology.

This endowment fund was established in memory of Dr. Elmer A. Palmatier (1912-1995) to support a scholarship awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate in the Department of Biological Sciences. Dr. Palmatier was a professor in the Department of Botany at URI from 1942-1982, and in those 40 years, he shared his knowledge of botany, philosophy, and life with more than 12,000 students.

Richard D. Wood Memorial Awards for Excellence

  • R.D. Wood Academic Achievement Award in Botanical Sciences

Eligibility: Junior or senior standing with a major in BS Biological Sciences, BA Biology, or BS Marine Biology), an overall GPA > 3.0, and at least two courses in plant biology numbered 300 or higher (completed or currently registered).

Required application materials include (1) a completed Application Cover Sheet, (2) an essay describing your academic achievements and interests in plant biology, (3) current transcript (unofficial, from e-campus) and (4) at least one letter of recommendation from a faculty member. Submit the Application Cover Sheet, essay, and transcript as a single PDF file to Dr. Alison Roberts (aroberts@uri.edu), and ask a faculty member to send one letter of recommendation to Dr. Roberts by the deadline of March 31. Outstanding scholarship as reflected in the application materials, transcript, and letter of recommendation will be used as criteria for this award.

  • R.D. Wood Memorial Award for Excellence in Botanical Sciences

Eligibility: Junior or senior standing with a major in BS Biological Sciences, BA Biology, or BS Marine Biology), an overall GPA > 3.0, at least two courses in plant biology numbered 300 or higher (completed or currently registered) and submission of an original research paper (an individual effort, which may be the outcome of independent research, BIO 491/492, Honors Project, course project, or an original library-based project). Students are encouraged to discuss their interest in applying for this award with a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences.

Required application materials include (1) a completed Application Cover Sheet, (2) an essay describing your academic achievements and interests in plant biology, (3) current transcript (unofficial, from e-campus), (4) an original research paper, and (5) at least one letter of recommendation from a faculty member. Submit the Application Cover Sheet, essay, and transcript as a single PDF file and the Research Paper as a separate PDF file to Dr. Alison Roberts (aroberts@uri.edu) and ask a faculty member to send one letter of recommendation to Dr. Roberts by the deadline of March 31. Outstanding scholarship as reflected in the application materials, transcript, research paper, and letter of recommendation will be used as criteria for this award.

The Richard D. Wood Memorial Awards were established by the family and friends of the late Professor Richard Dawson Wood to acknowledge the achievements and recognize the promise of outstanding junior or senior students in the botanical sciences.
