Critical analysis of primary literature and local case studies are\u00a0integrated with daily SCUBA-based investigations. J-Term (10 days)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Short Cruise-Based Courses aboard the R\/V\u00a0<em>Endeavor<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<br>Occasional courses offered by faculty in CELS and GSO that incorporate a cruise on URI\u2019s research vessel, the R\/V\u00a0<em>Endeavor<\/em>; these will be announced on a semester-by-semester basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>BIO 355: Marine Invertebrates of Southern New England<\/strong>\u00a0<br>Students study invertebrate diversity in their Rhode Island backyard where considerable local biodiversity is challenged by coastal development and the effects of climate\u00a0change. Summer Term \u2013 4 weeks<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are encouraged to perform research or independent study projects with faculty and take advantage of the unique programs available through&nbsp;College of the Environment and Life Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Undergraduate Research Fellowships<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"cl-wrapper cl-card-wrapper\"><a class=\"cl-card  \" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/coastalfellows\/\" title=\"\"><div class=\"cl-card-container text\"><div class=\"cl-card-text\"><h2>CELS Summer Research Fellowship Program<\/h2><p>This fellowship offers the opportunity to engage in environmental research, education, or outreach programs that address current environmental or societal problems.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"cl-card-container button\">Become a fellow<\/div><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"cl-wrapper cl-card-wrapper\"><a class=\"cl-card  \" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/surf\/\" title=\"\"><div class=\"cl-card-container text\"><div class=\"cl-card-text\"><h2>RI NSF EPSCoR Fellowship<\/h2><p>The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) offers URI students 10 weeks of intensive real-world training with active, National Science Foundation research projects.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"cl-card-container button\">Gain experience<\/div><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"cl-wrapper cl-card-wrapper\"><a class=\"cl-card  \" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/academics\/surfo\/\" title=\"\"><div class=\"cl-card-container text\"><div class=\"cl-card-text\"><h2>Research Fellowships in Oceanography<\/h2><p>The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) provides 10-week research experience designed primarily for science, math and engineering students.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"cl-card-container button\">Ocean Research<\/div><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"cl-wrapper cl-card-wrapper\"><a class=\"cl-card  \" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/cels\/diversity-and-inclusion\/sef\/\" title=\"\"><div class=\"cl-card-container text\"><div class=\"cl-card-text\"><h2>Science and Engineering Fellows Program<\/h2><p>This programs connects students from underrepresented cultural backgrounds to research opportunities working with faculty mentors.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"cl-card-container button\">Gain skills<\/div><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Undergraduate Teaching Assistant opportunities <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are encouraged to join the Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA) program in Biological Sciences labs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon successful completion of lab, interested students are encouraged to apply to the UTA program. URI BioSci engages UTAs who truly understand the material and can: 1) communicate their knowledge effectively, 2) engage students in learning material, and 3) work with the GTA to create an equitable and productive learning environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UTAs have the unique role of acting in two capacities. UTAs aid fellow students as peer-educators and use their experience as a student-teachers to help improve course content. The UTA role is also an excellent leadership opportunity that allows students to work closely with faculty and graduate students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Semester programs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>URI offers credit for students who spend a semester taking courses and doing research at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bios.edu\/\">Bermuda Institute of Ocean Science<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sea.edu\/\">SEA Semester program at Woods Hole<\/a> through the URI study abroad program.<\/p>\n\n\n<a class=\"cl-button  block-level\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/global\/study-abroad\/semesters-abroad\/\" title=\"\">Semester Programs<\/a>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Regional Opportunities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Our students take advantage of the many internships and research opportunities in the region, including the RI Department of Environmental Management, the Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration, the Roger Williams Zoo, Save the Bay, and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The URI Center for Career and Experiential Education helps students get started.<\/p>\n\n\n<a class=\"cl-button  block-level\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/career\/\" title=\"\">Find Internships<\/a>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Diving Research and Safety Information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Scuba diving is an important part of both academics and undersea research at the University of Rhode Island.
