Learn to Swim: Group & Private

Let your children learn a skill that lasts a lifetime! Our Learn-to-Swim program offers a group instructional setting for participants of all swimming levels. Ages range from infants to teens. All swim classes are taught by American Red Cross-certified instructors. Our lessons strive to create a safe and comfortable learning environment while teaching your children new swimming skills, important water safety behavior and introducing them to a great form of exercise.

PROGRAM POLICIES

WITHDRAWAL POLICY: A 25% withdrawal fee will be assessed for all withdrawals and must notify URI Campus Recreation prior to activity.

REFUNDS: No cash refunds will be given by the Department of Campus Recreation. A balance will be applied to the client’s account, following the Withdrawal Fee listed above. There will be no expiration for this balance and it will remain on the account until it is used by the client (balances are non-transferable and must be used within a family).

TRANSFER FEE: There is a $5.00 transfer fee for EACH transfer made from one class to another. All transfer must be made at the Rec Service Center.

Private Lessons

Private lessons are offered on a one-on-one basis at times that fit your schedule! Our qualified instructors make learning more enjoyable for all skill abilities from non-swimmer through advanced competitive levels. Days and times are coordinated with your personal instructor in conjunction with the Aquatic Specialist.  A Semi-Private lesson is a lesson where two participants choose to have a lesson together.  The cost of the half hour lesson includes both participants.  Some instructors are trained to work with individuals with disabilities.

Registration for the Spring 2018 Semester begins Tuesday, January 22nd
Classes meet once a week for a 10 week period: January 26th -April 30th.

Parent & Child,
Age Requirement: 6 months – 3 years

This class is designed for infants and toddlers to develop a comfort level in and around the water.  Instructors will teach the parent/guardian how to assist their child with swimming and provide them with information for aquatic safety.

Preschool: Level 1,
Age Requirement: 3 – 5 years old

This class is designed for children who have little to no water experience or may have a fear of going underwater. Participants start developing a good attitude and safe practices around the water.  Children will work on basic swimming skills through play and incidental learning to encourage a fun and enjoyable experience.

Preschool: Level 2,
Age Requirement: 3 – 5 years old

This class is for children who are comfortable submerging their faces and are ready to learn basic aquatic locomotion skills on both the front and the back with assistance.  New safety skills and review of previous knowledge from Preschool Level 1 will be covered.

Preschool: Level 3,
Age Requirement: 3 – 5 years old

This class is designed for children who are very comfortable in the water and can perform basic front and back floats and swim 3 body lengths with assistance.  Increased locomotion skills will be taught at this level with the goal of the child swimming independently at least 5 body lengths. New safety skills and review of previous knowledge from Preschool Levels 1 and 2 will be covered.

Preschool: Level 4,
Age Requirement: 4 – 6 years old

This class is designed for children who have mastered the skills in Preschool Level 3 and can swim independently at least 5 body lengths on their front and back.  Diving will be introduced at this level as well as the elementary backstroke and rotary breathing.

Child & Youth Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills,
Age Requirement: 5 years old

This class is designed for children who have little to no water experience or may have a fear of going underwater. Participants will work on basic swimming skills with support and start developing a good attitude and safe practices around the water.

Child & Youth Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills
Age Requirement: 5 years old

This class is designed for children who are comfortable submerging their faces and are ready to learn fundamental aquatic skills on both their front and back without support.  New safety skills and review of previous knowledge from Level 1 will be covered.

Child & Youth Level 3: Stroke Development,
Age Requirement: 5 years old

This class is designed for those students who have mastered the skills in Level 2.  Participants will be taught the front crawl and elementary backstroke and be able to swim at least 15 yards of both these strokes.  It will introduce diving skills and safety as well as dolphin and scissor kicks.   New safety skills and review of previous knowledge from earlier levels will be covered.

Child & Youth Level 4: Stroke Development,
Age Requirement: 5 years old

This class is designed for those students who have mastered the skills in Level 3.  Participants will build confidence and endurance in strokes previously taught by swimming greater distances (at least 25 yards) and will learn 2 new headfirst entries.  This level will also introduce, and have the students swim at least 15 yards, of back crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, and butterfly as well as complete open turns.  New safety skills and review of previous knowledge from earlier levels will be covered.

Child & Youth Level 5: Stroke Refinement,
Age Requirement: 5 years old

This class is designed for those students who have mastered the skills in Level 4.  Participants will work on refining strokes learned in that level and continue to build their coordination and endurance.  This level will introduce flip turns on both the front and back.  New safety skills and review of previous knowledge from earlier levels will be covered.

Child & Youth Level 6: Fitness Swimming,
Age Requirement: 5 years old

This class is designed for those students who have mastered the skills in Level 5 and who want to achieve a higher level of aquatic fitness or transition into competitive swimming.  This course is designed to refine participant’s strokes in order to increase ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances.  Students will be introduced to starting and turning techniques as well as more.

Child & Youth Level 6: Diving,
Age Requirement: 5 years old

This class is designed for those students who have mastered the skills in Level 5 and who want to learn the fundamental skills of springboard diving.  Participants will also refine strokes in order to increase ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances.

 Family Membership Discounts / Benefits

Learn to Swim member rates will only be provided to Family TAC Members.  Members will also receive priority registration for aquatic programs (on-line and in-person).  URI Students/Individual Members receive discounts for certification classes (first-aid, CPR, AED instructional classes) and Aquatic Fitness Activities.

Lockers service and personal training are available for patrons with memberships.
