After dropping two straight to Stony Brook the weekend prior, the Rams bounced back in commanding fashion, outscoring Temple 15-0 over the two games to complete a weekend sweep.

Friday: Temple 0, URI 6

URI wasted no time setting the tone in Friday night’s opener. Just over two minutes into the game, forward Cameron Cyr, the Rams’ leading scorer, buried the first goal of the weekend to give Rhode Island an early lead. Corey Szabo doubled the advantage later in the period, putting the Rams up 2-0 heading into the first intermission.

Szabo picked up right where he left off in the second, netting his second goal of the night to make it 3-0. Cyr followed suit with his own second tally of the game, extending the lead to four. Before the period ended, Justin Bonfiglio joined the scoring column with a goal in the final seconds of the frame, capping a dominant second period for URI.

Nathan Marshall added the exclamation point in the third period, scoring his second goal of the season to seal the 6-0 victory. Goaltender Nicholas Maringola recorded the shutout, anchoring a URI defense that stifled Temple’s attack from start to finish. URI took 45 shots on goal to Temple’s 23.

Saturday: Temple 0, URI 9

Saturday’s rematch began just like Friday’s game, with Cam Cyr finding the back of the net early to give URI a 1-0 lead. Cyr struck again late in the first period, extending the advantage to 2-0 after 20 minutes. The Rams outshot the Owls 15–4 in the opening frame, controlling play from the drop of the puck.

The second saw two more Rhode Island scores despite being outshot by Temple 23-17 in the period. An Owen Hall score, followed by a Max Lockwood score gave the Rams a 4-0 lead going into the third period.

The third period saw a lot of scoring action for the Rams, mostly due to some penalties against Temple. Justin Bonfiglio opened the scoring in the period, followed by a shorthanded goal from Cyr, his third of the night. Moments later, URI went on a five-on-three power play, where Cyr struck again for his fourth goal of the game. Lockwood finished the scoring with back-to-back power play goals, completing his hat trick and putting an exclamation point on a dominant team effort.

Goaltender James Hunt recorded the shutout for Rhode Island, making 29 saves on 34 Temple shots. The Rams finished with 46 shots on goal, marking their second straight game eclipsing 45 shots.

With the sweep, URI improved to 10–4 overall and 6–2 in ECHA play, sitting just behind 11–4 George Mason University for first place in the division. The Rams will host George Mason next weekend at Boss Ice Arena, with puck drop set for 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14 and 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15. A sweep over the Patriots would move URI into first place in the conference standings.

By John Almy
Class of 2026
Journalism Major

Image credits: Sky Connor / URI Campus Recreation

The University of Rhode Island men’s hockey team hosted Temple University for a two-game Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association (ECHA) series this weekend at Boss Ice Arena.
