In order to do this we ask the supervisor and placement site to:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div class=\"fullwidth\">Provide the student with a hands-on learning experience that combines practical application, observation, professional opportunities and mentorship.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"fullwidth\">Provide feedback on the student goals and assist the student in meeting the objectives.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"fullwidth\">Provide adequate supervision in a safe environment with the necessary tools and equipment to perform intended services.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"fullwidth\">Be willing to provide more autonomy and responsibility as the intern demonstrates competence.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-notice-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-notice\" data-hash=\"83878c91171338902e0fe0fb97a8c47a\"><p>Past students have indicated that regularly scheduled meetings with the supervisor to discuss work assignments and performance greatly enhances the student&#8217;s experience as well as productivity.<\/p><\/div><\/section>\n<p><a name=\"appropriate\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"row-full\">Appropriate vs. Inappropriate Work for Students &nbsp;|&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/career\/guidelines-for-internship-supervisors\/#menu\">\u21e1 MENU<\/a><\/div>\n<p>There are many different tasks for students that may or may not be appropriate for a student who is earning credit. The majority of work should be beneficial for the student and enhance their career goals or objectives. If you are unsure of whether something is appropriate or inappropriate contact the CCEE. Here are some examples of each:<br \/>\n<table id=\"tablepress-4\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-4\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<th class=\"column-1\">Appropriate Work for a Student<\/th><th class=\"column-2\">Inappropriate Work for a Student<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody class=\"row-striping row-hover\">\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><p>\u2022  Development, assessment, or evaluation of programs<br \/>\n\u2022  Web development<br \/>\n\u2022  Participating in important meetings\/discussions and taking an active role<br \/>\n\u2022  Challenging work related to student's career interests (as applicable to the internship placement)<br \/>\n\u2022  Assisting \"walk-in\" individuals or clients<br \/>\n\u2022  Promotion and advertising<br \/>\n\u2022  Creating programs or events<br \/>\n\u2022  Demonstrating writing, reading, and\/or math skills on a level required for employment in a chosen career field<\/p><br \/>\n<\/td><td class=\"column-2\"><p>\u2022  Personal errands for employer<br \/>\n\u2022  Work that is potentially unsafe<br \/>\n\u2022  Performing administrative tasks (filing, copying, answering phones, etc.) that make up more than 30% of the intern's work responsibilities*<br \/>\n<br \/>\n<em>*Administrative tasks are present and necessary in any job or internship, <br \/>\nhowever your student is earning academic credit for his\/her experience. <br \/>\nOnce the job becomes more administrative than learning-focused, it ceases to be an internship and becomes a paid work position.<\/em><\/p><br \/>\n<br \/>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-4 from cache --><\/p>\n<div class=\"fullwidth\">\n<p><strong>The Department of Labor holds that if all six of the following conditions are met, the student is not considered an employee and not entitled to at least minimum wage and overtime: <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div class=\"fullwidth\">The training, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to that which would be given in a vocational school.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"fullwidth\">The training is for the benefit of the trainees.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"fullwidth\">The trainees do not displace regular employees, but work under close observation.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"fullwidth\">The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the trainees, and on occasion his operations may actually be impeded.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"fullwidth\">The employer and the trainees understand that the trainees are not entitled to wages for the time spent training.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"fullwidth\">The trainees are not necessarily entitled to a job at the completion of the training period.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><a name=\"recommendations\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"row-full\">Recommendations for Supervisors &nbsp;|&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/career\/guidelines-for-internship-supervisors\/#menu\">\u21e1 MENU<\/a><\/div>\n<h3>Preparing for Your Student<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Upon arrival your student will need an introduction to your organization, including the structure, policies (both formal &amp; informal), dress code, agency mission, clientele, and confidentiality issues.<\/li>\n<li>Consider the necessary resources and prepare a workspace for the student to do the job successfully.<\/li>\n<li>Determine what time and when you will be available during the week for your student to access you.<\/li>\n<li>Consider responsibilities that are career related, challenging, and realistic for your student to complete.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>At the Start of the Experience<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Clarify the agency&#8217;s mission, clientele, and confidentiality issues.<\/li>\n<li>Orient the student to their new work environment and safety issues.<\/li>\n<li>Discuss what roles and responsibilities the student will have.<\/li>\n<li>Provide supervisor contact information including phone and email.<\/li>\n<li>Outline agency policies including dress, parking, and hours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>During the Experience<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Conduct an orientation and training session.<\/li>\n<li>Clarify the access a student has to a supervisor during the week.<\/li>\n<li>Assign duties that are career related, challenging, and realistic.<\/li>\n<li>Provide the necessary resources to do the job successfully.<\/li>\n<li>Use the company&#8217;s best people as supervisors and mentors.<\/li>\n<li>Include student in daily activities &#8211; including lunch!<\/li>\n<li>Provide detailed explanations of projects students are starting.<\/li>\n<li>Provide timely feedback regarding student&#8217;s job performance through the evaluation process and daily interaction.<\/li>\n<li>Offer compensation when feasible and appropriate.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage networking by creating opportunities for the students to interact with key people within the organization.<\/li>\n<li>Offer real, meaningful work to the interns that they can showcase in their professional portfolio.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a name=\"bestpractices\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thank you for your interest in serving as an intern supervisor for our URI students. &nbsp;
