What are the policies, practices, and institutions currently in place that address crime\u2014and what do they reveal about us as a society? Do they achieve justice? What does justice mean to us?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth\">In criminology and criminal justice, we explore these questions and more with an interdisciplinary approach, drawing from multiple fields in the social sciences and humanities. From these perspectives, we consider how social issues and our lived experiences impact our understanding of criminality and criminal justice policy and practice. Together we seek answers\u2014in the classroom, in our research, and through experiential learning\u2014always with justice in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why CCJ at URI?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th><strong>Interdisciplinary solutions<\/strong><\/th><th><strong>In and out of the classroom<\/strong><\/th><th><strong>Many paths to follow<\/strong><\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Crime is a complex social problem. That\u2019s why we approach criminology and criminal justice from an interdisciplinary perspective. In addition, as a CCJ major, you can supplement the core curriculum with electives from other majors in the College of Arts &amp; Sciences\u00ad to further broaden your perspective\u2014and if you choose, you can add a minor or another major in a related discipline that can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/artsci\/news\/gabby-dovale-20-on-combining-criminology-and-criminal-justice-with-history\/\">open new doors\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uri.edu\/news\/uri-students-win-boren-scholarship-fellowship-to-study-languages-overseas\/\">in new places<\/a>.<\/td><td>CCJ\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/ccj\/people\/\">faculty<\/a>\u00a0analyze all facets of crime and criminal justice\u2014from why people engage in criminal behavior to how our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/artsci\/news\/dr-chelsea-farrell-new-assistant-professor-of-criminology-and-criminal-justice-joins-us-this-fall\/\">police<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/today.uri.edu\/news\/uri-professors-book-explores-quality-of-life-crimes-specialized-courts-and-criminal-justice-reform-efforts\/\">judicial<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/artsci\/news\/criminology-and-criminal-justice-faculty-examine-efforts-to-reduce-recidivism-in-the-state-of-rhode-island\/\">correctional systems<\/a>\u00a0respond to it. In your classes, you\u2019ll benefit from their expertise. Out of the classroom, you can participate in research projects and engage in experiential learning options, such as internships in law enforcement and government agencies, advocacy services, and social service agencies, among many others.<\/td><td>Both as practitioners in the field and as graduate students, our CCJ alumni have a range of options and a variety of paths to follow. CCJ graduates have gone on to work for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/artsci\/news\/hitting-the-streets-john-vaccaro-12-on-what-led-him-to-working-with-the-nypd\/\">government agencies<\/a>, at non-profits, and in industry jobs.
