Ecology and Ecosystem Sciences (EES)

The Ecology and Ecosystems (EES) group brings together faculty and graduate students to solve problems at the forefront of ecology and ecosystem science. We define ecology broadly; our research interests cover the spectrum of biological organization from microbes to ecosystems, and take us to terrestrial and aquatic habitats worldwide. Our work is an exciting mix of basic research on natural systems, coupled with work designed to inform social policy, resource management, and conservation practices.

prospective students

A strong advisor-student relationship is central to the EES program. Prospective students must contact faculty directly prior to applying in order to explore mutual interests. Flexibility in our graduate program also encourages our students to work across traditional departmental boundaries and they often seek interdisciplinary collaborations.

what should i submit with my online application?

All applications must be submitted online through the URI Graduate School. EES application deadlines are outlined in the FAQs section. In addition to the graduate school submission requirements, please make sure the following are also included in your application materials submitted:

  • At the beginning of your personal statement, please list the names of one or more potential advisors in bold-face type.  Your application is unlikely to be successful unless you have corresponded directly with a prospective advisor prior to submitting your application.
  • Arrange for submission of two letters of recommendation.
  • Consider submitting any additional materials that provide direct evidence of relevant experience or writing ability, such as published papers, research posters, or reports. Please upload any such documents as “supplemental materials”.
  • GRE scores are NOT required as part of your application.
