Science and Engineering Fellows Program

Providing students from minoritized populations in STEM with the opportunity to build community while obtaining professional & research skills to address real-world challenges.

At URI, the College of the Environment and Life Sciences (CELS) and the College of Engineering (COE) partnered to create the Science and Engineering Fellows Program for students.

Our goal is to have students leave the Science and Engineering Fellows Program more prepared to enter the job market with the professional skills and training needed to succeed. Students also help to advance the research of their faculty and staff mentors while gaining invaluable experience.

Application process

Who should apply

Full time students interested in engaging in research who belong to minoritized populations in science and engineering, and who are members of the College of the Environment and Life Sciences or the College of Engineering are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to rising sophomores (second year students) and juniors (third year students).

How to apply

CELS students can use the Common App to apply. This application will allow you to be considered for 4 fellowships: Science & Engineering, Coastal & Environmental Fellows, RI-INBRE SURF and the RISG Community Engaged Internship.

If you are a CELS student and you have question about the application, please contact Assistant Dean Fajardo Grandidge.

Engineering students should contact Assistant Dean Watson for questions about the engineering application process.

When is the application due?

Northeast Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation

Recognizing a need to foster the development of research skills in students from populations historically excluded from the Sciences and Engineering fields, Northeastern University, the University of Connecticut, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the University of Rhode Island, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute joined to form the Northeast Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (NE LSAMP). The group receives funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to strengthen the preparation, representation, and success of historically under-represented minority students in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
