{"id":21476,"date":"2026-04-13T12:11:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T16:11:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/cels\/?p=21476"},"modified":"2026-04-13T12:11:43","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T16:11:43","slug":"mapping-what-matters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/cels\/news\/mapping-what-matters\/","title":{"rendered":"Mapping What Matters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>You might not think twice about the technology behind your daily routines, whether checking directions, browsing homes online, or swiping on a dating app. But all of those tools rely on the same powerful concept: geographic information systems, or GIS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the study of how everything lives in space,\u201d says Lincoln Dark &#8217;21, M.E.S.M &#8217;22. \u201cWhen you use Google Maps, or Zillow, or even dating apps that tell you someone is \u2018within two miles\u2019\u2014that\u2019s all GIS-based data.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dark applies that same technology in a very different\u2014but incredibly important\u2014context: managing critical water infrastructure for the city of Providence, Rhode Island.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mapping an invisible system<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After earning his bachelor\u2019s degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/nrs\/academics\/wildlife-and-conservation-biology\/\">wildlife and conservation biology<\/a> from the University of Rhode Island, Dark completed URI\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/cels\/academics\/mesm\/\">Master of Environmental Science and Management <\/a>program, where he was first introduced to GIS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was looking for ways to continue my education and expand my skillset,\u201d he says. \u201cGIS ended up being that technical skill that opened doors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, Dark works as a GIS specialist for the Providence Water Supply Board, where he helps manage a \u201cdigital twin\u201d of the region\u2019s water infrastructure\u2014a detailed, constantly updated map of everything from reservoirs to household connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBasically, every pipe, every valve, every hydrant\u2014we map all of it,\u201d he says. \u201cFrom the second the water leaves the reservoir to how it gets to every single building.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the data becomes especially critical during emergencies, most of his work focuses on precision and consistency. He updates the system as infrastructure changes and supports engineering projects with detailed maps and digital documentation. \u201cMy day-to-day is making sure what you see on the screen matches exactly what\u2019s in the ground,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Data in service of community<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the technical work, Dark sees his role as a form of public service. His team helps identify homes with outdated or hazardous infrastructure, including lead service lines, supporting efforts to improve water quality across the region. \u201cWe help streamline the process of water maintenance,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd we help identify areas where people can get their lead pipes replaced.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Dark, the impact is personal. \u201cIt feels good knowing I\u2019m doing something helpful for the community,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While GIS may sound niche, Dark emphasizes that it\u2019s everywhere\u2014and that\u2019s exactly what makes it so valuable. Its versatility translates directly into career opportunities, especially for students interested in environmental fields. \u201cThere\u2019s GIS in everything,\u201d he says. \u201cYou\u2019re guaranteed a job somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His own career is proof. What began as an interest in wildlife conservation has evolved into a role at the intersection of technology, infrastructure, and public service\u2014one that quietly supports entire communities every day. While most people never think about the systems beneath their streets, Dark is making sure they work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>10 Under 10<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dark was recently recognized with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alumni.uri.edu\/events-reunions\/annual-special-events\/10-under-10-awards\/\">URI\u2019s 10 Under 10 Award,<\/a> an honor that highlights young alumni making significant professional and community impact.
