What she didn’t know was how that goal would evolve and deepen through new experiences at the University of Rhode Island that helped shape a more focused path toward veterinary medicine.

At URI, Caron studied animal science on the pre-veterinary track, refining that early ambition to work with animals through coursework, farm work, leadership roles across campus, and hands-on learning experiences that ultimately helped inform the future in veterinary medicine she’ll pursue after graduation this month.

Growing up in Westerly, Rhode Island, from a young age Caron was drawn to animals and the people who care for them. Early visits to Mystic Aquarium played a formative role in shaping her interests and goals. “I was always fascinated by the trainers and staff at Mystic Aquarium,” she says, “and I decided at a very young age that pursuing a career in veterinary medicine was something I was going to do. It was a non-negotiable.”

That certainty, however, evolved during her time at URI, particularly through hands-on academic experiences. A pivotal moment came when Caron enrolled in the Winter Dairy Travel Course led by Professors Justine Deming and Dave Townson. Traveling to more than a dozen dairy farms across New England, she was introduced to the realities of food animal production in a way that challenged her assumptions and broadened her perspective.

“Before this course, I was not going to apply to vet school, and I had no idea what I wanted to do with my degree,” Caron says. “I fell in love with dairy cattle, and I felt really strongly about helping the producers who owned these operations.” The experience also shifted how she viewed the agricultural industry itself. “I had a lot of wrong ideas about food animal operations before,” she says, “and it made me realize that it’s a field that is really lacking in support.”

Caron carried that new direction into her work at URI’s Peckham Farm, where she served as a Small Ruminant Intern. Under the direction of Assistant Farm Manager Julie Bosland and Farm Manager Coleman Repogle, she gained hands-on experience with lambing, kidding, breeding activities, and cattle care. “Without Peckham Farm and the support from the people who love it so much, I would not have been able to apply to veterinary school this past cycle,” she says.

Alongside her academic and farm experiences, Caron also developed her leadership skills through involvement in Alpha Xi Delta, where she held multiple roles, including executive board positions and Director of Ritual and Fraternity Appreciation. She also served as a recruitment counselor, helping guide prospective students through the sorority recruitment process.

As she prepares to move on to the next step, Caron will begin her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine studies at St. George’s University in Grenada in January. “I am thrilled to be able to move to Grenada and experience a new life in a beautiful place I have never seen before,” she says. “I love Rhode Island, but Grenada is calling my name!”

Looking back at her time at URI,, Caron credits the animal science program and its experiential learning opportunities with shaping not just her resume but her direction. “I feel fully prepared to become a doctor,” she says. “I owe it all to URI’s AVS department and the incredible people I have met along the way.”

Her advice to incoming students reflects the balance she has worked to strike throughout her college career. “You can do it all,” she says. “You can enjoy your time in college to the fullest while also pursuing a difficult degree. You are your own biggest critic, and if you put your mind to it, you can achieve big things.”

Through hands-on learning, leadership, and farmwork at URI, animal science major Paige Caron ‘26 discovered her passion for large animal veterinary medicine and will now pursue Doctor of Veterinary Studies in Grenada.

[26

post-21571","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
["GET
