{"id":10003,"date":"2022-06-16T09:58:38","date_gmt":"2022-06-16T13:58:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/chs\/?p=10003"},"modified":"2023-08-16T10:36:44","modified_gmt":"2023-08-16T14:36:44","slug":"uri-professors-honored-as-champions-for-child-advocacy-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/chs\/2022\/06\/16\/uri-professors-honored-as-champions-for-child-advocacy-2\/","title":{"rendered":"URI professors honored as \u2018Champions\u2019 for child advocacy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ellen Flannery-Schroeder and Nicole O\u2019Malley recognized by Washington County Coalition for Children<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Two University of Rhode Island professors were honored as \u201cchampions\u201d for child advocacy May 26 during the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washcokids.org\/\">Washington County Coalition for Children\u2019s<\/a> annual Children\u2019s Issues Forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Psychology Professor Ellen Flannery-Schroeder was named one of two \u201cChampions for Community Change,\u201d an award given to a member of the coalition who has gone above and beyond in their efforts to improve outcomes for our children. The coalition\u2019s top award \u2014 Champion for Children \u2014 went to Clinical Assistant Professor of Music Therapy Nicole O\u2019Malley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flannery-Schroeder was chosen because of her proven commitment to improving children\u2019s mental health through such efforts as organizing mental health training with local pediatricians, and creating the <a href=\"http:\/\/thegreatest8.org\/home\/\">coalition\u2019s \u201cGreatest Eight\u201d program<\/a>, which teaches parents eight core skills to help their children achieve lasting mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEllen is an eager collaborator and creative out-of- the box thinker,\u201d said Susan Orban, coordinator of the coalition.<strong><em>&nbsp;\u201c<\/em><\/strong>Her passion for teaching is evident in the fun, engaging ways she engages her audiences, whether students, health\/behavioral health providers, or parents.&nbsp;An expert in child anxiety and treatment, Ellen seizes every opportunity she can to promote children\u2019s mental health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flannery-Schroeder also delivered the event\u2019s keynote address, remarking on the monumental challenges children have faced in recent years \u2014 including the COVID-19 pandemic and repeated school shootings throughout the country, among other problems \u2014 and the resulting negative impacts on their mental health. She focused in part on the need for children to learn to become resilient when faced with adversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cChildren don\u2019t have world experience and perspective to deal with some of the bad things in the world,\u201d Flannery-Schroeder said in her address. \u201cThey need to know storms come and go, and will keep coming. But we might not want to remove all of these trials because there will be more in life. We want our kids to be resilient when faced with those roadblocks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cChampion for Children\u201d O\u2019Malley, who is also founder and executive director of Hands in Harmony, a non-profit music therapy organization, was chosen for her work with infants and young children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHer trailblazing efforts fostering bonding through the development of personal lullabies for substance exposed newborns, and developing skills through musical play in early intervention programs are to be commended,\u201d Orban said. \u201cShe is a music therapy leader in our state and her work with vulnerable children, as well as people with health conditions and disabilities of all ages, is worthy of public recognition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Washington County Coalition for Children is a coalition of social service agencies, health providers, parents, legislators, town officials and volunteers who advocate on behalf of the region\u2019s children.
