After needing physical therapy following knee surgery when she was a junior in high school, Winnes knew she wanted to work with patients in a similar way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI knew physical therapy was the career for me and by studying at the University of Rhode Island, I could create a home away from home, with my family close enough for me to visit,\u201d said Winnes, a native of Cranston, Rhode Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Winnes was this year\u2019s recipient of URI\u2019s 10 Under 10 Award for the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/chs\/\">College of Health Sciences<\/a>. The awards recognize outstanding young professionals who embody the spirit and values of the University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was very excited to win the award,\u201d said Winnes, who is a physical therapist, board certified orthopedic specialist, and clinic director for Pappas OPT. \u201cI loved my time at URI and I\u2019m proud to be a representative of URI when I\u2019m out in the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"687\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/chs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/969\/10-Under-10-2-1024x687.jpeg\" alt=\"Many of Winnes\u2019 family members who attended the awards ceremony also alumni of URI, including, from left, Dan Macera \u201911, DPT\u201914; Lauren Macera \u201912, DPT\u201914; Joshua Macera \u201924; on the far right, John Macera \u201987, P\u201911, P\u201924. Christopher Winnes, third from the right, is an assistant coach of the URI men\u2019s club hockey team.\" class=\"wp-image-12167\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.4906832750231487;width:552px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/chs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/969\/10-Under-10-2-1024x687.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/chs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/969\/10-Under-10-2-300x201.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/chs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/969\/10-Under-10-2-768x515.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/chs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/969\/10-Under-10-2-364x244.jpeg 364w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/chs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/969\/10-Under-10-2-500x335.jpeg 500w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/chs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/969\/10-Under-10-2-1000x671.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/chs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/969\/10-Under-10-2.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Winnes and the other nine award recipients were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alumni.uri.edu\/news\/uri-foundation-hosts-2026-10-under-10-awards\/\">honored at a ceremony<\/a> in URI\u2019s Soloviev Basketball Practice Facility on Feb. 14, and later that afternoon during halftime of the URI men\u2019s basketball game at the Ryan Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a student at URI, Winnes entered the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/physical-therapy\/dptprogram\/\">Doctor of Physical Therapy program<\/a> while still completing her <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/kinesiology\/academics\/b-s-program\/\">bachelor\u2019s degree in kinesiology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was challenging, but when the material you are learning is interesting and it directly applies to your career path, it makes studying a little easier,\u201d said Winnes. \u201cI would recommend this path to students who believe strongly in their ability to manage their time appropriately.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Winnes also recommends gaining as much practical experience as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDo as many observation hours in as many different settings as you can,\u201d advised Winnes. \u201cThere are many different forms of physical therapy outside of the standard settings and this might help you discover a passion you didn&#8217;t know existed.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alumna Alexandra Winnes honored among &#8216;outstanding young professionals who embody the spirit and values of the University&#8217; Alexandra Winnes \u201919 \u201921 always felt drawn to the health care field.
