Many people experience their first symptoms during their college years.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anxiety can cause overwhelming feelings of fear and worry that interfere with your daily life. If anxiety is affecting your life, there are ways to address and overcome it.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Signs of Anxiety<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We all experience some anxiety\u2026it can help us sometimes. However, when anxiety becomes too intense or lasts too long, it can interfere with life.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Signs of anxiety may include:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Feeling on edge or restlessness&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Rapid heartbeat&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Shortness of breath&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Difficulty concentrating&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Racing thoughts&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Avoiding places\/activities&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Repetitive or intrusive thoughts&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Sleep difficulties&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Muscle tension&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Upset stomach\/nausea&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Headache&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Worrying a lot about the future<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Contributes&nbsp; to Anxiety?<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Stress&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Change\/transition\/adjustment&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Trauma, grief, or loss&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Alcohol, cannabis, caffeine, nicotine, and other substance use&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Avoiding the things that make you uncomfortable&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Poor eating habits&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Not enough or too much sleep&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Other mental health concerns&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Poor physical health\/certain medical conditions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ways to Cope&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are things you can do that may lessen your anxiety. Try a few of these ideas each day, even when you are feeling good.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Meditation or mindfulness practice&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Take deep, slow breaths from your abdomen&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Regular exercise&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Limit alcohol, caffeine, cannabis and other drugs&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Talk to someone and ask for what you need&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Journal&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Awareness and education: learn what triggers your anxiety&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Let go: there are some things that are out of your control&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Spend time helping others&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Humor&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Spend time with uplifting friends&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Do something artistic such as coloring, painting or playing music&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Progressive muscle relaxation&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Do what matters (even if it makes you anxious): you can experience anxiety AND still do what is important to you<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When to get Help<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Anxiety is interfering with your life (e.g., grades, relationships, self- esteem, etc.)&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Self-help strategies aren\u2019t working&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Life is feeling more and more controlled by fear&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> It\u2019s affecting your ability to sleep or eat&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> You\u2019d like to feel better<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to get Help<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;The URI Counseling Center can help.&nbsp;&nbsp;We offer:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Workshops&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Groups&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Individual counseling&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Anonymous online screenings<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/counseling\/care\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/counseling\/care\/\">Care Management<\/a> services for assistance finding off-campus services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You are not alone.
