The stress of day-to-day life can affect your well-being to the point where you may develop symptoms of depression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When the stress makes you sad and the sadness lasts for a while or interferes with your life, it may be depression.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Depression is a common response to academic demands and other sources of stress present in the campus environment. Fortunately help is available.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><strong>Signs of Depression&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Everyone has days when they feel overwhelmed with life. However, when days become weeks, this is cause for concern.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Signs of depression may include:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Losing interest in things you once enjoyed&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Skipping classes or missing&nbsp; assignments&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Having a hard time concentrating&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Feeling a lot of sadness, anger or loneliness&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Spending most of your time alone&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Eating a lot more or less than&nbsp; you used to&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Sleeping too much or too little&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Being tired even after a good night\u2019s sleep&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Feeling hopeless&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Having thoughts about death or suicide<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1><strong>Ways to Cope<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are things you can do right now for a quick mood boost. The more ways you try to cope with depression, the better. Try a few of these ideas each day, even if you\u2019re feeling good.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Spend some time in nature&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Listen to music&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> List what you like about yourself&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Read a good book&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Watch a funny movie or TV show&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Take a long hot bath or shower&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Talk to friends or family&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Take care of a few small tasks&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Do something spontaneous&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Play with a pet&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Get out of bed in the morning and stay out of bed until nighttime&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Meditate&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Color&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Spend time helping others&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Exercise and eat well&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Get a good night\u2019s sleep<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1><strong>When to get Help&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Your symptoms of depression aren\u2019t going away or are getting worse&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> These feelings are interfering with your life (e.g., grades, relationships, self-esteem, etc.)&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Your sleep and appetite are affected&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> You have thoughts of suicide&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> You don\u2019t know how to feel better on your own<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1><strong>How to get Help<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;The URI Counseling Center can help.&nbsp;&nbsp;We offer:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Workshops<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Groups&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Individual counseling&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Anonymous online screenings<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/counseling\/care\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/counseling\/care\/\">Care Management<\/a>&nbsp;services for assistance finding off-campus services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You are not alone.
