This talk will discuss examples of data science being applied to music and meal planning, as well as introducing publicly available resources for exploring culturally motivated data. This talk will delve deeply into the multidisciplinary field of Music Information Retrieval (MIR) motivated by the comparisons that we, as humans, make about music and the various contexts of these comparisons. Specifically, we discuss the aligned hierarchies, which is a structure-based representation that can be used for comparing songs, and new extensions of aligned hierarchies that leverage ideas from topological data analysis. The talk will then pivot to how we can think about meal planning as “playlists of recipes” and the data-based challenges associated with building a database of meal plans.

Bio
Katherine M. Kinnaird is a computational researcher working at the intersection of machine learning, mathematics and cultural analytics. Currently she is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Statistical & Data Sciences at Smith College as well as Chair of the CS Department. The central driving force behind her work is the building and supporting of authentic bridges between statistics, mathematics, machine learning and music information retrieval, as well as other disciplines like human computer interaction and text analysis. Kinnaird is also committed to supporting communities so that all who have interests in computer science, statistics and mathematics are encouraged, supported and inspired. She co-organized the 2013 Workshop for Women in Machine Learning (WIML), co-located with the largest machine learning conference in the world, Neural Information Processing Systems, and she has served on the WiML executive board, including a term as president. Kinnaird also was a co-organizer for the first Women in Music Information Retrieval (WiMIR) Workshop in 2018 and served as the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Chair for the ISMIR conference in 2024.

When: Friday, October 2, 1:00 PM Where: Tyler 106 AbstractData science seems to be everywhere these days.
