{"id":10778,"date":"2021-12-22T14:07:42","date_gmt":"2021-12-22T19:07:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/disability\/?page_id=10778"},"modified":"2025-03-05T14:15:44","modified_gmt":"2025-03-05T19:15:44","slug":"tips","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/disability\/tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Tips for College Success"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check and <\/span><b>read your URI email and <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/brightspace\/\"><b>Brightspace <\/b><\/a><b>every day<\/b><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Get organized <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/a\/users\/answer\/9302892?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Calendar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on all of your devices to keep everything you need to know in one place. Set reminders or notifications as needed. Add classes, due dates, set aside time for homework, club meetings, personal or Starfish appointments, and important deadlines like housing and registration.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Communicate proactively &#8211;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Send your accommodations letters as early in the semester as you can, and request use of accommodations proactively (usually at least a week in advance). It&#8217;s always best to share concerns with a processor or an advisor sooner, rather than waiting until you are overwhelmed or a problem gets too big.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Communicate professionally &#8211; <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grammarly.com\/blog\/professional-email-in-english\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Write professional emails<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the faculty and staff you interact with. Include a greeting, your student ID#, course information, the purpose of your communication, proper punctuation and tone, and an appropriate closing with your full name. Do not send emails that resemble texts, or several brief emails in a short period of time. Allow time for people to respond, especially if you reach out at night or over a weekend. Remember to respond to emails in a timely manner too.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Set reasonable and fair expectations &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of your roommates, yourself, and your professors. People are imperfect, and may not think, communicate, or experience things the same way you do. People have difficult days, say things they don&#8217;t mean, and behave in ways they are not proud of. Grace, compassion, and flexibility go a long way. Remember that students at all levels and ages are adjusting too. Clearly and fairly communicate what you need and how you feel. People aren&#8217;t mind readers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ldonline.org\/article\/19317\/\"><b>Know yourself as a person and a learner <\/b><\/a><b>&#8211;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 Know what your diagnoses entail, what you need to focus, study, and be successful in your classes. In college, professors are experts in their field of study, and it is the student\u2019s job to make sure they use their self-knowledge to get the most out of each course.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Ask for and accept help &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reach out to DAI or connect via our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rhody.webex.com\/meet\/DAI\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WebEx drop-in hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, book an appointment for tutoring with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/aec\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Academic Enhancement Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, visit professor\u2019s office hours, connect with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/counseling\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Counseling Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/healthservices\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and reach out to your providers outside of school before a problem gets too big.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Be responsible &#8211;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You are expected to take care of yourself, and to know <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/manual\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">URI\u2019s policies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1081\/Student-Handbook-FINAL-08.22.2019.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conduct expectations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as the expectations and requirements of each of your classes. Work should be submitted on time, class attended regularly, and help sought before a problem gets too big.
