especially when managing tasks, organization, or deadlines can be challenging.  Many families are accustomed to being highly involved in planning and monitoring progress. In college, students take the lead in making decisions about their academic needs.  Their support systems provide encouragement, guidance, and support as a coach or sounding board. Over time, this collaborative approach can help students build confidence, independence, and self-advocacy skills, while still having the support they need to succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth\">\ud83d\udc49 <em>Guidance, tips, and support tailored to <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/student-affairs\/first-generation-students\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/student-affairs\/first-generation-students\/\">first-generation students and families<\/a> new to higher education.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" id=\"behalf\" \/>\n\n\n<section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-boxout-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-boxout  fullwidth\"><h1>May I act on behalf of my student?<\/h1>\n\n<p>No. Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), DAI can only act upon requests made directly by the student. The process considers the student\u2019s strengths, skills, diagnostic profile, and functional needs.  Accommodations are medically supported and <strong><em>cannot<\/em><\/strong> change the fundamental requirements of a course. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have concerns, the best way to support your student is to encourage them to discuss the accommodations directly with DAI.
