The most significant differences involve <strong>legal protections, student and family roles, and academic expectations<\/strong> in a university environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center fullwidth\">Legal Protections: Success vs. Access<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">In high school, students are protected under IDEA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. These laws require schools to provide a <strong>free and appropriate public education (FAPE)<\/strong> in the least restrictive environment.  Schools develop structured plans, such as IEPs and 504 plans, that support student success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">Your education team includes <strong>you, your parents or caregivers, and school staff<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">Plans may include <strong>accommodations and modifications<\/strong>, along with skill-building supports<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">Schools are responsible for identifying needs and creating supports<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-quote-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-quote  type-intro\"><blockquote>In high school, disability laws are designed to <b>promote student success through structured support systems<\/b>.<\/blockquote><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">In college, the legal framework changes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">The ADA (as amended) and Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act are <strong>civil rights laws focused on access and non-discrimination<\/strong>. Their purpose is not to guarantee success, but to <em>ensure equal access<\/em>. They function as anti-discrimination laws with a focus on access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">They ensure <strong>equal access<\/strong>, not guaranteed success <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">They do <strong>not include modifications<\/strong> to essential course requirements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center fullwidth\">Your Role in College<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">In college, <strong>you, the student, are the decision-maker<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">You take primary responsibility for<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">Initiating services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">Requesting accommodations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">Communicating with faculty and campus partners<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">To receive accommodations, you must<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"fullwidth type-intro\"><strong>Self-disclose and identify<\/strong> with Disability, Access, and Inclusion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">Submit documentation to disclose your disability to our office<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">The DAI team is here to <strong>support and partner with you<\/strong>, but the process begins with<em> you<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">Because of federal privacy laws, communication happens <strong>directly with you, not your supporters <\/strong>(family, parents, or caregivers). Documents such as a power of attorney or a guardianship agreement <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">do not<\/span> override these protections in the college setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center fullwidth\">Understanding Reasonable Accommodations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">A reasonable accommodation is <strong>not a change to what you are expected to learn<\/strong>, but a way to ensure you have <strong>equal access<\/strong> to a course, program, service, living environment\/housing assignment, transportation, or activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center fullwidth\">Reasonable accommodations <strong>cannot fundamentally alter essential course or program requirements<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center fullwidth\">What Does \u201cOtherwise Qualified\u201d Mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth\"><em>Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (as amended) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, students who are \u201cotherwise qualified\u201d are entitled to equal access to programs, services, and opportunities at URI.<\/em> As a college student, you are considered \u201cotherwise qualified\u201d if you meet the <strong>essential requirements<\/strong> of a course or program, WITH or WITHOUT accommodations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You review your program expectations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You determine that you have the <strong>skills, preparation, and ability<\/strong> to participate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disability-related barriers are addressed through <strong>reasonable accommodations<\/strong>, not changes to core requirements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"cl-button  block-level prominent\" href=\"#take-care\" title=\"\">caretaker<\/a>\n\n\n<p id=\"take-care\">Nutrition, movement, sleep schedule, resource use.<\/p>\n\n\n<a class=\"cl-button  \" href=\"#manage\" title=\"\">manager<\/a>\n\n\n<p id=\"manage\">Making good choices, asking for help if needed, holding yourself accountable to go to clas, complete work on time, setting your own reminders for deadlines like housing or registration, checking and reading pertinent emails.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">At URI, we intentionally support you in taking a <strong>leadership role in your education<\/strong>.  You are in the driver\u2019s seat.  This means you are expected to<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"type-intro fullwidth\">Initiate contact\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"type-intro fullwidth\">Schedule appointments with professors, tutors, DAI staff, and other campus resources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"type-intro fullwidth\">Connect with DAI to discuss your access needs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"type-intro fullwidth\">Lead communications about your needs in person, in writing, or other formats<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"type-intro fullwidth\">Navigate deadlines and coursework<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"type-intro fullwidth\">Attend class and engage with course expectations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"type-intro fullwidth\">Build routines that support your well-being (sleep, nutrition, balance)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">We recognize that these skills may be <strong>new, challenging, or impacted by disability<\/strong>. Developing them is part of the college learning experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center fullwidth\">Partnership and Support<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">The DAI team works collaboratively with you to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"type-intro fullwidth\">Troubleshoot challenges<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"type-intro fullwidth\">Explore options<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"type-intro fullwidth\">Identify practical solutions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center fullwidth\">The Role of Support Networks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">Your support network of parents and caregivers remains important.  However, since it is YOUR degree and YOUR college experience,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"type-intro fullwidth\">the choices available are decided by <strong>your actions<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"type-intro fullwidth\">the decisions belong to <strong>you<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center fullwidth\">Your Voice has the final say.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth type-intro\">These expectations are not barriers, but <strong>foundations<\/strong> for success.
