The goal of these projects is to support research and scholarship that promotes public science communication and scientific literacy within the University of Rhode Island, the writing and rhetoric community, and other diverse publics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grant-Funded Lab Projects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-boxout-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-boxout  \"><h1>Manissean Walking Tour <\/h1>\n\n<p>\u201cManissean\u201d is the name given to the indigenous people who lived on the island of \u201cManisses\u201d, renamed Block Island after the Dutch explorer, Adrian Block. The Manissean peoples are a distinct tribal community that share ancestors with members of the Narragansett, Wampanoag, Niantic, and Pequot peoples. Current signage tends to erase both history and contemporary Manissean life from the public sphere. In response, the Manissean AR tour serves as a portal or threshold for the tour users, inviting them into a space of mixed reality content designed by tribal leaders and culture bearers. Learn more on the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/dwell\/projects\/manissean-tour-map\/\">DWELL Block Island project page<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n<section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-boxout-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-boxout  \"><h1>Central Passaic Basin<\/h1>\n\n<p>This is an evolving environmental storytelling project created by the DWELL Lab for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/subjects\/nnlandmarks\/index.htm\">National Natural Landmarks Program<\/a>\u00a0as part of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/programs\/scip\/\">Science Communication in the Parks<\/a>\u00a0(SCIP) project, sponsored by a collaboration between the National Parks Service and the Ecological Society of America. <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/dwell\/nnl-nps\/\">This project<\/a> consists of web content, an interactive digital map, and augmented reality posters that together tell the story of New Jersey\u2019s Central Passaic Basin.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-boxout-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-boxout  \"><h1>North Woods Project<\/h1>\n\n<p>An immersive multimedia \u201cclassroom in the forest\u201d experience for the North Woods on URI&#8217;s campus. This project combines augmented reality (AR), web development, and digital mapping to lay the groundwork for an ongoing research and teaching project the North Woods Stewardship Council. Learn more on the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/dwell\/projects\/north-woods\/\">DWELL NWP project page<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n<section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-boxout-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-boxout  \"><h1>Sources, Transport, Exposure &amp; Effects of PFAS (STEEP II) <\/h1>\n\n<p>The STEEP II project (2022-2027) is studying the effects of PFAS (or or poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances) on environmental and human health. As part of this research, the Research Translation Core team is sharing information on PFASs and their human health impacts using creative, community-engaged strategies to make important findings visible and meaningful for the public. As part of this collaboration, DWELL developed the AR game <em><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/dwell\/projects\/pfas-kitchen-steep\/\">PFAS Kitchen<\/a><\/em>, available on our website.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-boxout-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-boxout  \"><h1>RI Agriculture &amp; Food Systems Fellows Program<\/h1>\n\n<p>The Rhode Island Agriculture and Food Systems Fellows Program (RIAFSFP) was established in 2022 to engage and train students passionate about careers centered on food\u2013as producers, processors, policymakers, educators, advocates, or communicators through funded, year-long experiential learning opportunities with academic researchers and industry professionals. You can learn more on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/coopext\/afsfp\/\">AFSFP Program Website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n<section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-boxout-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-boxout  \"><h1>Stormwater Innovation Collab<\/h1>\n\n<p>DWELL is partnering with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stormwaterinnovation.org\/home\">Providence Stormwater Innovation Center<\/a> in Roger Williams Park to map and model the green stormwater infrastructure sites in the park and produce educational AR installations for public environmental education.
