He was 93.<\/p>\n<p>Feinstein\u2019s association with URI began in 1993 with scholarships awarded to students attending the university. A gift in 1998 resulted in the naming of the Alan Shawn Feinstein College of Continuing Education in Providence, later changed to the College of Education and Professional Studies in 2016, before being renamed in 2023 to the College of Education dedicated primarily to educator preparation.<\/p>\n<p>Feinstein was known for donating millions of dollars to local colleges, schools and scholarship programs to help children in need. He also founded the Cranston-based Feinstein Foundation in 1991, which \u201cencourages youngsters to do good deeds and be kind whenever possible,\u201d according to their website.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is with a heavy heart that I inform you of my father\u2019s passing this weekend,\u201d his daughter, Feinstein Foundation CEO Leila Feinstein, posted on Facebook. \u201cHe was surrounded by family and loved ones. We will miss him dearly but are heartened by the fact that he led a long and meaningful life. It gave him peace in his final moments knowing our work will continue even though he is no longer with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Feinstein received honorary doctorate degrees from several colleges, including the University of Rhode Island. Many schools around Southern New England bear the Feinstein name.<\/p>\n<p>Feinstein amassed his fortune through the sale of collectibles and an investment newsletter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlan Shawn Feinstein dedicated his career to uplifting public education from K-12 to higher education. He will be remembered for his educational philanthropy and his desire to make the world a better place for children,\u201d said Danielle Dennis, dean of the Feinstein College of Education.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Feinstein graduated from Boston University and Boston Teachers\u2019 College, and taught in Massachusetts and Rhode Island schools.<\/p>\n<p>He lived in a modest home in the Edgewood section of Cranston. &nbsp;He is survived by his wife, Dr. Pratarnporn \u201cPat\u201d (Chiemwichit) Feinstein, daughter Leila and five grandchildren.
