The events held during URI’s fifth annual Engineering Week displayed the enthusiasm, camaraderie and teamwork that students in the College of Engineering are known for. From April 3-6, students organized and participated in four successful events.
The events were planned by the following student organizations:
- Capture the Flag (canceled due to snow) – AIChE (American Institute of Chemical Engineers) & ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers)
- Evening with Industry – ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) and Theta Tau
- and Ms. Engineering – SWE (Society of Women Engineers) and SASE (Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers)
- Trivia Night – EMBS (Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society) and SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers)
- Engineering Ball – ESW (Engineers for a Sustainable World) and NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers)
The student organizations accumulated points during the week, based on participation, attendance, achievement, and significant contributions to the success of Engineering Week. The winning organization was awarded the coveted Engineering Cup. The top three teams were:
- 1st Place – Theta Tau
- 2nd Place – Society of Women Engineers (SWE)
- 3rd Place – Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS)
A new award, “The Spirit of Engineering Week Award,” recognized individuals for their outstanding contributions to 2018 Engineering Week by promoting involvement, positive attitudes, and the spirit of E-Week by building a sense of community within their student organizations and the URI College of Engineering. Sydney Robinson and JP Carlin were selected for this honor.
Here are some details on the four events that were held.
Evening with Industry
Twelve industry representatives and 33 students attended this event. The following companies were represented:
- Bay Computer Associates
- BETA, Inc
- Commissioning Agents Incorporated
- FM Global
- General Dynamics Electric Boat
- Pare Corporation
- Sensata
Mr. and Ms. Engineering
Nine contestants competed in the talent show. The winners were seniors Savannah Mullarney, a chemical engineering major, and Ulices Ortiz an industrial engineering major. Both students are seniors.
Trivia Night
Eight teams competed. The winning team was B-Squad, second place was Muffin-Less, and finishing third was Smarties and David. The winning team included:

Engineering Ball
The Engineering Ball, held at Laurel Lane Country Club, was sold out for the first time in E-Week history.
