This page outlines how to request exceptions to academic rules or degree requirements, how to appeal a course grade, and who serves on the committee that reviews these cases, in accordance with University policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth\"><strong>Academic Appeal Process<\/strong><br>The University of Rhode Island has established procedures for students who wish to request exceptions to academic rules or appeal academic decisions. These procedures follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/manual\/chapter-8\/chapter-8-2\/#:~:text=8.26.10%20Appeals%20Procedure\">University Manual (Sections 8.26.10\u20138.26.13)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth\"><strong>Types of Appeals.&nbsp; <\/strong>You may file an appeal if you are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list fullwidth\">\n<li>Requesting an exception to degree requirements, courses of study, or other academic rules.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Challenging a recorded grade in a course.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth\"><strong>Exceptions to Degree Requirements or Academic Rules<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list fullwidth\">\n<li>Submit the appropriate petition form (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2168\/CURRENT-Major-Course-Petition-Fillable-Revised-11.10.25.pdf\">Major Course Petition<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2168\/CURRENT-General-Education-Course-Petition-Fillable-Updated-8.2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">General Education Petition<\/a>) to the College of Engineering Dean\u2019s Office forms<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSf5dhS9Pob9V7hMLGniJ478VkFOTbzSR75874Mf9JgzoaATuQ\/viewform\">portal<\/a>. Your petition must clearly explain your request and the reason(s) for it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copies of all petitions are kept by the Dean\u2019s Office for at least two years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No exception to a University or College rule will be granted outside this process.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth\"><strong>Grade Appeals. <\/strong>If you believe a final grade in a course is incorrect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list fullwidth\">\n<li>Start with your instructor \u2013 discuss the grade directly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If unresolved, submit a written appeal to the instructor\u2019s department chair (or immediate supervisor in colleges without departments).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The chair will respond in writing. If they believe your case has merit, they will inform the instructor and provide copies of your appeal and their response.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If still unresolved, the case may be referred to the College of Engineering Scholastic Standing Committee (SCC).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The committee will investigate and notify all parties in writing. The decision of the SCC is final.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth\"><strong>Possible outcomes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list fullwidth\">\n<li>If the committee does not recommend a grade change, the original grade remains.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the committee recommends a change and the instructor agrees, the grade will be updated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the committee recommends a change but the instructor refuses, the committee can, by unanimous decision, direct the department chair\/supervisor to change the grade over the instructor\u2019s objection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth\"><strong>Important notes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list fullwidth\">\n<li>Appeals must be filed within two semesters of the grade being issued.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grades under appeal will not be considered when evaluating students for program continuation or scholarship eligibility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If an instructor is unavailable (e.g., deceased, cannot be located), the chair\/supervisor may act in their place following committee recommendation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fullwidth\"><strong>Scholastic Standing Committee Membership<\/strong><br>The College of Engineering\u2019s Scholastic Standing Committee, responsible for reviewing petitions and appeals in accordance with University policy, is composed of one faculty representative from each undergraduate major in the College of Engineering, the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Affairs, and the Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th><strong>Major<\/strong><\/th><th><strong>SCC Faculty Member<\/strong><\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Biomedical Engineering<\/td><td><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/ecbe\/meet\/yalda-shahriari\/\">Prof. Yalda Shahriari (Course Petitions) <\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/ecbe\/meet\/walter-g-besio\/\">Prof. Walter G.
