Through education, collaboration, outreach, and professional development, we strive to provide students with opportunities to expand their knowledge, develop practical and professional skills, and engage with the broader nuclear science community. Our mission is to promote scientific inquiry, safety, public understanding, and the responsible advancement of nuclear science while creating an inclusive, engaging environment where students can learn, connect, and explore the many possibilities of the nuclear field.

Vision: The URI Nuclear Club envisions a community where students are empowered to explore nuclear science, engineering, technology, and related fields through education, collaboration, and hands-on experience. We strive to foster a culture of curiosity, safety, and informed engagement while connecting students with academic, professional, and community opportunities. Through these efforts, we aim to strengthen nuclear science education and outreach at the University of Rhode Island and throughout Rhode Island, preparing students to become knowledgeable, responsible, and engaged members of the broader nuclear science community.

Core Values: The Nuclear Club is grounded in curiosity, responsibility, collaboration, and a commitment to learning. We believe that meaningful engagement with nuclear science begins with the willingness to ask difficult questions, examine evidence, and understand both the possibilities and responsibilities that come with the field. We value a culture where students can learn from one another, pursue ideas beyond the classroom, and develop confidence through shared experiences. Safety and scientific integrity guide our work, while openness and accessibility shape how we connect with our campus and community. Above all, we aim to cultivate a community that approaches nuclear science with both intellectual curiosity and a sense of responsibility toward the people and world it serves.

Membership: We are open for new members any time within the academic year.

Why Join? The URI Nuclear Club gives students a place to explore nuclear science beyond the classroom, whether you are already studying the field or simply curious about how it shapes science, technology, society, and our future. Our events bring together technical learning, discussion, professional development, and opportunities to experience the nuclear community firsthand. Members can explore topics ranging from the history and cultural impact of nuclear science to radiation physics, nuclear safety, and nuclear security. Members will also have opportunities to hear directly from current and former nuclear reactor interns and to visit the Rhode Island Nuclear Science Center for a reactor tour. Whether you are interested in nuclear chemistry, reactor engineering, radiation science, national security, medicine, energy, public policy, or simply want to understand the technology around you, the Nuclear Club offers opportunities to learn alongside students with different interests and backgrounds. Through presentations, conversations, tours, networking, and hands-on experiences, members can build knowledge, make connections, and discover where nuclear science can take them.

Meetings: We meet Wednesdays 3–4 p.m., in Beaupre 300 on URI Kingston Campus. – From time to time, meetings may be held at the Rhode Island Nuclear Science Center on URI Bay Campus, often in conjunction with a facility tour.

Professional Development/Leadership Opportunities: The Nuclear Club offers a variety of executive board positions that give students the opportunity to develop leadership, communication, and organizational skills while helping maintain the club’s connections with the broader nuclear science community. E-board members may work directly with professionals, researchers, faculty, and organizations such as RINSC to create opportunities for students to connect with the field beyond the classroom. Members have opportunities to attend regional meetings, conferences, and events hosted by organizations such as the American Nuclear Society (ANS), ACS Nuclear Chemistry & Technology (ACS NUCL), and other organizations within the nuclear science community. Through these experiences, students can build professional connections, learn about different career paths, and gain exposure to the academic, research, industry, and professional communities surrounding nuclear science.

Events
Rhode Island Nuclear Science Center Reactor Tours: The Nuclear Club organizes small-group tours of the Rhode Island Nuclear Science Center to give members and the public an opportunity to learn about Rhode Island’s local research reactor and connect with the broader nuclear science community.

The Nuclear Club hosts a variety of educational, social, and professional events, including trivia nights, professional discussion panels, career roadmapping sessions, and more.

Advisor: Dr. Bahram Nassersharif, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics, College of Engineering

Contact Information: uri.nuclearclub@gmail.com

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/uri.nuclear/
Website: https://sites.google.com/uri.edu/urinuclearclub/

Eligibility: Open to all majors, students, alumni and community members.
