{"id":88918,"date":"2026-06-25T09:21:39","date_gmt":"2026-06-25T13:21:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/engineering\/?p=88918"},"modified":"2026-06-25T10:20:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-25T14:20:12","slug":"masters-graduate-receives-2026-academic-achievement-award-from-the-american-water-works-association","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/engineering\/masters-graduate-receives-2026-academic-achievement-award-from-the-american-water-works-association\/","title":{"rendered":"Master&#8217;s graduate receives 2026 Academic Achievement Award from the American Water Works Association"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>WASHINGTON, D.C. \u2014 June 25, 2026 \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/cve\/masters-student-lands-dream-job\/\">Carrie Ellis<\/a> received the 2026 Academic Achievement Award at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awwa.org\/\">American Water Works Association<\/a> Annual Conference and Exposition (ACE26) this June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Academic Achievement Award recognizes contributions to the field of public water supply via a master\u2019s or doctoral dissertation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ellis\u2019s thesis, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/awwa.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/aws2.70038\">Electrochemical Regeneration of Manganese Oxide (MnO<sub>x<\/sub>)-Coated Media,<\/a>\u201d investigates a promising reagent-free approach for regenerating oxide-coated media. By eliminating the need for chemical reagents, the research expands the potential application of this water treatment technology to decentralized systems, including isolated, point-of-use, small, and rural water systems both in the United States and around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AWWA gives the Academic Achievement Award to four recipients \u2014 a first and second place in the master\u2019s thesis category and a first and second place in the doctoral dissertation category. Ellis received first place in the master\u2019s thesis category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am honored to have been selected as this 2026 First Place recipient. More importantly, I\u2019m both excited and proud of this research\u2019s potential impact on small, rural systems, and deeply appreciative of AWWA\u2019s recognition\u2013 not only of this work, but also of URI\u2019s Water for the World Lab and its ongoing efforts to advance a globally sustainable relationship with water,\u201d Ellis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AWWA comprises 50,000 water professionals from across the globe.
