You can major in English at many universities, but URI offers you a unique approach to the discipline. With the exception of one required course, you will build a major that grows out of your\u00a0interests. Some of your courses must be at the 300- or 400-level, and some will explore\u00a0certain historical periods\u2014but you will\u00a0design\u00a0your own curriculum within these guidelines. If you discover a\u00a0special interest\u00a0in poetry or fiction or 19th century literature, you can take\u00a0additional\u00a0courses in those areas, and, if you like, you\u00a0can take up to three courses in creative writing.\u00a0It’s your choice.<\/p>\n
Your professors\u00a0are the people you want to study with if your goal is to cultivate your abilities as a critical thinker and a creative writer. You will work one-on-one with prize-winning\u00a0scholars and writers, who have won\u00a0some of the country’s most prestigious awards.\u00a0Your professors are\u00a0experienced, enthusiastic, and energetic teachers, who have earned national and international reputations for their work. And\u00a0they are the ones who\u00a0will challenge you, encourage your interests, offer you guidance, and support your goals.<\/p>\n
The English major is 36 credits (nine courses), and can easily be completed in two years. So\u00a0if you choose,\u00a0you\u00a0can acquire a solid\u00a0background in English as well as\u00a0a genuinely broad experience in other disciplines. This\u00a0can take the form of a double major\u2014more than doubling your career options. Other choices include adding a minor\u00a0in another area of interest or\u00a0exploring\u00a0a wide\u00a0range of elective courses.<\/p>\n
English is a major with great career versatility. Why? Because a\u00a0major in English equips you with the kind of reading, writing, and critical thinking skills that any employer will value. The range of possibilities is extensive: Some\u00a0of our graduates are professional writers and editors, others have gone on to successful careers in politics, law, and advertising, and to varied positions\u00a0in\u00a0both the non-profit and corporate sectors, while\u00a0others have become\u00a0educators in schools and in universities.<\/p>\n
