Courses taken for program credit must be at the 500 and 600 level. MA students can take up to two (2) 400-level courses (with the exception of courses with catalogue language indicating \u201cnot for graduate credit\u201d) toward their MA program requirements.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>27 credits of coursework that include:<br \/>\n&nbsp; ENG 510\/511: Introduction to Professional Study I and II; and<br \/>\n&nbsp; ENG 514: History of Critical Theories<\/li>\n<li>3 credits research<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The curriculum is organized around three distinct groups of courses:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Core courses in professional study and studies in critical theories<\/li>\n<li>Coursework that reflects a balance of graduate seminars in a range of period and national literatures, film, and creative writing.<\/li>\n<li>Masters research to develop a thesis or <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/english\/ma-non-thesis-option\/\">non-thesis<\/a> portfolio.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Core Courses<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>ENG 510:&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Introduction to Professional Study I<\/strong> (1.5 crs.)<br \/>\nOrientation to the major discourses, critical frameworks, and databases constituting graduate researching language and literary studies, including computer-assisted research methodologies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ENG 511:<\/strong><strong>Introduction to Professional Study II<\/strong> (1.5 cr.)<br \/>\nOrientation to the major discourses, critical frameworks, and databases constituting graduate researching language and literary studies, including computer-assisted research methodologies. Pre: ENG 510<\/li>\n<li><strong>ENG 514:<\/strong><strong>History of Critical Theories (<\/strong>3 crs.)<br \/>\nHistorical survey of critical theory from antiquity to the present.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ENG 595:<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Master\u2019s Project PRO<\/strong> (3 crs.)<br \/>\nStudent produces MA portfolio in consultation with major professor and committee.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ENG 599: Master\u2019s Thesis Research (<\/strong>3 crs.)<br \/>\nStudent produces MA thesis in consultation with major professor and committee.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Special Topics Courses<\/h3>\n<p>In addition to the graduate course offerings, we offer graduate seminars in a range of period and national literatures, film, and creative writing called &#8220;Special Topics.&#8221; Two \u201cSpecial Topics\u201d courses are offered each semester, designed to showcase the instructor\u2019s current research and scholarship.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>M.A. in English Curriculum The Master of Arts in English degree requires the completion of 30 credits.
