Summer Bridge Program<\/h1>\n\n

ESTEEMED Scholars begin their training in a 5-week summer bridge enrichment program the summer prior to their freshman year in addition to the week-long ESTEEMED Academy program the week before classes begin. The bridge program will be coordinated with URI’s Talent Development Summer Success Program (TDSSP) and includes activities such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • College preparation course (1 credit)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • College writing course (3 credits)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Mental health first aid course (1 credit)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Social science workshops<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • STEM workshops<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • ESTEEMED bioengineering workshops<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/section>\n\n

    Academic Year Training<\/h1>\n\n

    During the academic year, ESTEEMED scholars will participate in semester-long training and support and will participate in mandatory activities exclusive to URI ESTEEMED Scholars, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Weekly ESTEEMED meetings,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Required cohort study sessions,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Participation in the ESTEEMED Entering Research<\/em> course,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. Individual and small group meetings with professors,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    5. Mentored laboratory research experiences (optional freshman year, required sophomore year),<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    6. Journal club participation,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    7. Leadership training,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    8. Blogging assignments, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    9. Travel to national scientific research conferences.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<\/section>\n\n

      Mentored Research<\/h1>\n\n

      ESTEEMED Scholars will participate in pre-research training during their freshman year in preparation for meaningful year-round mentored research in a laboratory of their choosing. They will also take part in peer and faculty mentoring to develop strong scientific skills and self-efficacy in research.<\/p>\n\n<\/section>\n\n

      Summer Research Experience<\/h1>\n\n

      ESTEEMED scholars have the option to do paid research after their freshman year and are given priority to participate in the RI-INBRE SURF or URI Science & Engineering Fellowship programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
