The program enables Scholars to learn foundational academic and scientific skills through academic enrichment and advising, financial support, faculty and peer mentoring, and training in URI biomedical research laboratories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As outlined on our <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/esteemed\/activities\/\">Activities<\/a> page, ESTEEMED Scholars participate in a 5-week summer bridge program with <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/talentdevelopment\/\">URI TD Scholars<\/a> during the TD Summer Success Program, academic year courses and workshops, summer research, and upon completion of the program, advanced undergraduate research training at URI.<\/p>\n\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"cl-tab \"><h1>Scholar Benefits<\/h1>\n\n<p>ESTEEMED scholars will receive the following benefits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Funding for on-campus housing and food for the 5-week summer bridge program through TD,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A stipend for participation in the summer bridge program,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Personalized one-on-one advising with ESTEEMED faculty and staff,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monthly support amounting to <strong>$5,000<\/strong> per semester (<strong>$10,000<\/strong> per year) during their freshman year and <strong>$6,000<\/strong> per semester (<strong>$12,000 <\/strong>per year) during their sophomore year,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Priority acceptance into paid URI summer research programs (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/riinbre\/training\/surf-undergraduate-fellowships\/\">RI-INBRE SURF<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/cels\/diversity-and-inclusion\/sef\/\">URI Science &amp; Engineering Fellows<\/a>) the summer after their freshman year,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Travel funds of <strong>$500<\/strong>\/year to attend a national student research conference,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>$4,000 <\/strong>to support participation in a summer research experience and $500 to travel to the site, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Priority consideration for entry into the Junior\/Senior-level <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/marc\/\">URI MARC U*STAR<\/a> undergraduate research training program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"cl-tab \"><h1>Scholar Expectations<\/h1>\n\n<p>To maintain their enrollment within the program, students are required to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Remain in good standing as a full-time student at URI (12 credits\/semester),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain a 3.0 GPA,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participate in required ESTEEMED activities, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demonstrate continued progress towards their degree.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The financial support provided by ESTEEMED is provided with the goal that ESTEEMED Scholars will not have to work an additional off-campus job during the academic year. As a result, Scholars are expected to prioritize their academic progress and training activities related to the program.<\/p>\n\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"cl-tab \"><h1>Mission &amp; Goals<\/h1>\n\n<p>The <strong>vision<\/strong> of the URI ESTEEMED program is to create a robust and inclusive undergraduate research environment for students early in their academic careers. The program <strong>mission<\/strong> is to significantly increase the preparation of ESTEEMED scholars to conduct bioengineering and biomedical-related research, enabling them to enter and succeed in an advanced honors research program with the ultimate goal of pursuing a Ph.D. in a related field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To successfully support educational activities and encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds to pursue further studies and careers in research, there are two overarching <strong>goals <\/strong>for the program:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Academic Enrichment and Research Skills Development<\/strong>: Develop a cohort of ESTEEMED Scholars from underrepresented backgrounds who embody critical thinking, engineering design, and fundamental research skills that enable them to develop an early scientific inquiry and research mindset.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Scholar Support, Soft Skills Development, and Community Building<\/strong>: Support the development of Scholars\u2019 STEM identity and self-efficacy through self-exploration, near-peer mentoring, academic and professional development advising, faculty mentoring, academic preparation, and positive research experiences.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<\/section>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":814,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"class_list":["post-72","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/esteemed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/72","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/esteemed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/esteemed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/esteemed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/814"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/esteemed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=72"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/esteemed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/72\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":676,"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/esteemed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/72\/revisions\/676"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/esteemed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=72"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
