Pat’s Pastured was founded in 2002 and provides the highest quality pasture-raised and grass-fed meats all grown in Rhode Island. Our goal is to provide our livestock with a life that allows them to express their natural instincts fully in a pasture environment. The Animal Care Facility at Brown University located in downtown Providence, RI has externship opportunities for 2 students this summer. The positions will be available from mid-May until late August and will be full-time paid positions ($13/hour with 37.5 hours/week). The length of the externship can be tailored to the individual but a minimum commitment of ten (10) weeks is expected.

The responsibilities of the extern will include assisting the animal care technicians, veterinary technicians, the facility manager, veterinarians and other Animal Care administrative staff with various daily activities in the animal facilities. The extern(s) will be expected to rotate through various sections of the Animal Care Facility including cage wash, animal husbandry, veterinary support services and surgical operations. Sun Farm Oyster farm is located in the inner pond of the Great Salt Pond, Block Island RI.  With over 15 years in operation, SFO is the largest of the 4 farms in Block Island waters. We are a surface culture farm meaning the majority of our gear is floating. Our team takes great pride in maintaining our equipment and educating the visitors about the benefits aquaculture has on the Pond.

We bought over 450,000 seed last season and are looking forward to getting them to market, as well as our other juvenile oysters.

Three internships are available for 10- to 12- weeks to support research at the FDA Gulf Coast Seafood Laboratory (GCSL)/Division of Seafood Science and Technology, Dauphin Island, AL.  This Division is within the Office of Food Safety, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN).  

The participants will assist research scientists in planning and conducting studies and related activities in support of the FDA’s mission to address the occurrence of hazards in seafood.  Potential areas of investigation for the internship awardees are:

1. Extraction of Neurotoxic Shellfish Poisoning (NSP) toxins from shellfish for detection by in vitroanalytical methods;
2. Characterization of a novel enzyme with histidine decarboxylase (HDC) activity;
3. Isolation, identification, and characterization of pathogenic Vibrio species from seafood samples.

We are an eco-epidemiology lab interested in how human changes to the landscape and the climate drive the emergence and spread of vector-borne diseases. Our main focus is on tick-borne diseases, including Lyme disease and babesiosis.

Primary duties will include handling and processing (collecting blood, tissue, and ticks) from small mammals, drag sampling for questing ticks, and mist netting, handling, and processing samples from birds. Other duties include maintaining field equipment and data entry. Preference will be given to individuals with experience handling, collecting blood samples, point count analysis, and having knowledge of the avian fauna on New York or Rhode Island.

Housing (only for Block Island), field equipment, and transportation on the island will be provided. Summary: Two-week immersion program in the areas of sustainable agriculture and food studies in Naples, Italy.  While immersed in dynamic socio-cultural contexts, students will learn from local scholars, experts, and activists. Students will learn about agriculture and aquaculture systems in Campania and how these sustain food cultures and local economies.  Emphasis will be placed on sustainable food systems for the city of Naples, especially the interconnection among city, countryside and sea in preserving local foods, markets, and culinary traditions.  Students will have opportunities for experiential learning through two farm-stays, a fishing expedition, cooking classes, and other hands-on learning activities. Overnight excursions to the Amalfi Coast and the Benevento agricultural region will expose students to the dramatically varied topography, biodiversity and food cultures of Campania.

Cape Cod Oyster Company manages 3 farms with over 50 acres in production in Barnstable and Falmouth Massachusetts.   We pack our oysters in a state of the art, 3^rd party audited facility located in Marstons Mills, Cape Cod.   The 4000 square foot facility includes a comfortable staff dining room, locker room, and laundry.

Responsibilities include the culture of oysters from nearly microscopic sizes thru market size.  This takes place on the water, working from boats and on tidal flats.  Other daily tasks include harvesting oysters , farm maintenance, culling (sorting) oysters by size and packing oysters for national distribution. 

Qualifications:  College degree or strong work equivalency, with demonstrated interest in working outdoors.   Clean driving record as applicant would be required to drive company refrigerated trucks.  Ability to pay attention to detail and concentrate when involved with repetitive tasks where accuracy is crucial. Boat handling experience is preferred but not necessary.

Basic computer skills are helpful as we use proprietary software that is part of our licensing requirements as a shellfish producer and distributor as well as record-keeping associated with activity on the farm and facility.

The Dolphin Communication Project (DCP) offers internships for college students during fall, spring, and summer semesters on a revolving basis. Currently seeking head teachers, teachers, and assistant teachers!

Camp staff work on a team of two teachers, one assistant teacher, and two high school-aged counselors to have amazing adventures with a group of 24 campers! Campers are divided by age, so staff who have expertise with a certain age group are welcome.

Teachers work together to plan activities that range from cooking to fort building and stream stomping to nature arts. Looking for folks who have big hearts, love kids, and want to spend their summer active and outside. Teachers do not need to have expertise in all program areas, but all teachers must be ready to get dirty, be active, be highly responsible, and have fun with children for all the hours they are at camp.
