{"id":6376,"date":"2024-05-30T11:32:27","date_gmt":"2024-05-30T15:32:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/fellowships\/?p=6376"},"modified":"2026-03-03T16:54:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T21:54:07","slug":"marshall-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/fellowships\/marshall-scholarship\/","title":{"rendered":"Marshall Scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Marshall Scholarship<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each year, up to 50 exceptional students are awarded the&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marshallscholarship.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marshall Scholarship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, providing them the opportunity to study for 1-3 years at any university in the United Kingdom. The Marshall Scholarship Program is intended to build relations between the United States and the United Kingdom by instilling in the Scholars a lasting understanding of British society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshallscholarship.org\/apply\/eligibility\/\"><b>Eligibility<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be a US citizen (at the time of application);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Have first undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the US by the time the scholarship begins (September 2027);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Have a GPA of no less than 3.7 on their undergraduate degree at the time of application;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Have graduated from their first undergraduate college or university after April 2023; and,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not have studied for or held a degree or degree-equivalent qualification from a British University or GCSE or A Levels taken at school in the UK.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshallscholarship.org\/apply\/eligibility\/\"><b>Selection Criteria<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Academic merit;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Leadership potential;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ambassadorial potential.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Application Materials<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshallscholarship.org\/apply\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Application form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that includes:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Biographical information;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Multiple essays based upon the specific prompts included on application form;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two-page resume consisting of college activities and honors;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A completed waiver;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Transcripts from other institutions attended (copies, screenshots, etc. are ok);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">3 letters of recommendation emailed directly to&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"mailto:Keegan.scott@uri.edu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keegan.scott@uri.edu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Campus Application Procedure<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For those interested in any of the prestigious post-graduate opportunities, please complete the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdOgeTqmcKm7p-MSjfRoNpiK1kwS-bTsIjQmLLPgr6Bke__Sg\/viewform\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Student Interest form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSc-_1gSTAkudRUlIjTZg2YeCEmWtfq2r-mOscoNl7RZUZgrRw\/viewform\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alumni Interest form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to receive program updates;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Attend one of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/fellowships\/calendar\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Post-Graduate Opportunities Info Sessions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or view a recording to determine the opportunity(ies) right for you;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For the Marshall, read the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshallscholarship.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marshall Scholarship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> website so you understand the eligibility and selection criteria;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/fellowships\/contact\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Schedule<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a meeting with the Office of Fellowships@URI to discuss your interest. Ideally, you will be reaching out in the Fall or Spring of your Junior year;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Begin crafting your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshallscholarship.org\/apply\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">application<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> based on the previous discussion with your Fellowships Advisor;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Submit your application by the second to last Monday of August (Monday, August 17<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">); this includes letters of recommendation;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Prestigious Postgraduate Fellowships Committee will review application materials and interview candidates shortly after;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Based on the interview and application materials, the committee will finalize URI\u2019s nominations for the Marshall, and craft an endorsement letter. We will email you directly about your nomination status and next steps to submit your final application.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Application Timeline<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There is no such thing as starting too early for the Marshall or other postgraduate opportunities! Begin taking challenging courses, think about ways you want to make an impact \u2013 and do those exact things \u2013 and speak with your professors about your collective interests and ideas.
