{"id":1099,"date":"2023-05-12T13:49:32","date_gmt":"2023-05-12T17:49:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/financial-aid\/?page_id=1099"},"modified":"2025-05-28T14:46:14","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T18:46:14","slug":"satisfactory-academic-progress-appeal-process","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/financial-aid\/satisfactory-academic-progress-appeal-process\/","title":{"rendered":"Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Appeal Process"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Undergraduate Students <strong>Appeal Process<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who are not meeting <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/financial-aid\/satisfactory-academic-progress-appeal-process\/\">Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) <\/a>requirements may appeal the decision to the Enrollment Services SAP committee if there were extenuating or unusual circumstances that affected their academic performance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-notice-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-notice\" data-hash=\"8abdc1f233221e987c7fc4c583142ba3\"><h1>Starting 2024-25 Academic Year<\/h1>\n\n<p><strong>Students:<\/strong> You&nbsp;may appeal by filling out the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Appeal<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/\/secure.na3.adobesign.com\/public\/esignWidget?wid=CBFCIBAA3AAABLblqZhB43BbDRiBC9KwgNmvWjh0HkY_V524NaNWRepHl2xAwnijOTYPnmbqFxc0T1GKizcI*__;Kg!!Jh1S!g2Dz1FjCNkBt5PdDXii5S2nEQ91OPlkx0kStkVLiAXrbOWu1qWEXv2gZD5XUw_QMcedo-LvqGVzjV2Zj2F1y7Z6stw$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;<strong>online<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>form<\/strong><\/a>.<br><strong>Advisors: <\/strong>You&nbsp;will need to complete Section E of the SAP Appeal. The URI Office of Financial Aid has created an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/financial-aid\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2069\/AY-2025-26_Advisor-Guide.pdf\">Advisor Guide to SAP<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>to assist Advisors on completing their section of the SAP Appeal.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n<p><strong>Step One: Gather Your Documentation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On the appeal form, you will need to provide a description of the factors that contributed to you not meeting the SAP standards including\u00a0what has changed in your situation that will allow you to demonstrate satisfactory academic progress at the next evaluation, and what specific resources you plan to use to ensure academic progress.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will need to upload third-party documentation that confirms your circumstances.&nbsp; Examples are provided on the SAP Appeal form.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step Two: Complete the Appeal Form<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Complete the SAP appeal form and electronically sign.\u00a0At the end of the form, enter your academic advisor&#8217;s name and email address.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step Three: Check your URI Email from Adobe Forms and Confirm Your Signature<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As soon as you submit your appeal, you&#8217;ll receive an email from Adobe Sign.\u00a0 You must click on the link in that email to confirm your electronic signature.\u00a0 Your appeal will not continue to the next step without this action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step Four: Contact your Advisor to Complete the Academic Plan<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following Step Three, a copy of your appeal will be e-mailed to your advisor.\u00a0 Contact them to meet to create your Academic Plan.\u00a0 This is a document that the advisor will submit with the courses you need to take in the academic term for which you appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n<section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-notice-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-notice\" data-hash=\"0d5057fe45574a8ef724edc24783b2dc\"><h1>Important!<\/h1>\n\n<p>You will need to successfully complete the number of credits listed on the Academic Plan as a condition of future financial aid eligibility, as outlined in the next section entitled \u201cIf your appeal is approved\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n<p><strong>Step Five: Your Advisor Completes and Submits Their Part of the Form<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your advisor will receive an email from Enrollment Services with a copy of your appeal.&nbsp; They will click on the link in the email to access your appeal, complete the Academic Plan, and electronically sign.&nbsp; Then the form will be routed to Enrollment Services for review.&nbsp; You will be notified of the results of your appeal via your URI email address, typically within three weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before an appeal will be considered, the student must have an active FAFSA on file for the semester for which they are requesting financial aid, and not be dismissed from the University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If your appeal is approved:<\/strong> You will be notified by email that you have been granted one semester of financial aid eligibility, on a probationary basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of your probationary term, your academic record will be reviewed again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you are meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress Requirements (minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA once you reach your second year or 60 credits and a minimum 67% credit completion rate), you will regain eligibility for financial aid.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are not meeting SAP requirements but you did meet the terms of your Academic Plan (number of credits successfully completed for the semester as written in the plan), you may receive financial aid for an additional probationary semester.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are not meeting SAP requirements and did not meet the terms of your Academic Plan, you are no longer eligible for financial aid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that if this Fall review results in the termination of eligibility for the Spring semester, the Winter J Term is included as an ineligible semester even if there is prior enrollment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If your appeal is denied: <\/strong>You will be notified by email and will not receive financial aid for the next period of enrollment.
