This is called the \u201cinterim exception.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Effective July 1, 2026 this program is not available for new borrowers.<\/strong> This is a result of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Prior Borrowers:<\/strong> returning students who borrowed a Direct Loan in the past and are enrolled in the same academic program as last year may be eligible for \u201cinterim exception\u201d <strong>AND<\/strong> may continue to borrow for up to three academic years <strong>OR<\/strong> for the remainder of the student\u2019s program, whichever comes first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For detailed information on applying for a Graduate PLUS Loan click <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/financial-aid\/federal-direct-unsubsidized-student-loan\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><sub><strong>Disclaimer: <\/strong>While the U.S. Department of Education has not yet released final implementation guidance, the University of Rhode Island is monitoring federal updates closely and will revise this page as additional information becomes available.
