{"id":10570,"date":"2019-04-01T18:30:29","date_gmt":"2019-04-01T22:30:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/general-education-draft\/?page_id=10570"},"modified":"2019-04-01T18:30:29","modified_gmt":"2019-04-01T22:30:29","slug":"learning-outcomes","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/general-education\/advisors\/learning-outcomes\/","title":{"rendered":"Learning Outcomes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>General education consists of 40 credits.&nbsp;Each of the twelve outcomes (A1-D1) must be met by at least 3 credits.&nbsp;&nbsp;A single course may meet more than one&nbsp;outcome, but cannot be double counted towards the 40 credit total.&nbsp;&nbsp;At least one course must be a Grand Challenge (G designation).<\/p>\n<p>General Education encompasses the following four key objectives (A-D), met by the following twelve outcomes (A1-D1):<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>A<\/em><\/strong><em>-Build&nbsp;<strong>knowledge&nbsp;<\/strong>of diverse peoples and cultures and of the natural and physical world through the following four outcomes:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A1&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013&nbsp;Understand&nbsp;and&nbsp;apply&nbsp;theories and methods of the&nbsp;<strong>science, technology, engineering, and mathematical (STEM) disciplines<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>A2&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013&nbsp;Understand&nbsp;theories and methods of the&nbsp;<strong>social and behavioral sciences<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>A3&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013&nbsp;Understand&nbsp;the context and significance of the&nbsp;<strong>humanities&nbsp;<\/strong>using theoretical, historical, and experiential perspectives<\/li>\n<li><strong>A4&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 Understand the context and significance of&nbsp;<strong>arts and design<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>B<\/em><\/strong><em>-Develop intellectual and interdisciplinary&nbsp;<strong>competencies&nbsp;<\/strong>for academic and lifelong learning through the following four outcomes:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>B1<\/strong>\u2013<strong>&nbsp;Write effective&nbsp;<\/strong>and precise texts that fulfill their communicative purposes and address various audiences<\/li>\n<li><strong>B2&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013<strong>Communicate effectively&nbsp;<\/strong>via listening, delivering oral presentations, and actively participating in group work<\/li>\n<li><strong>B3&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013Apply&nbsp;the appropriate&nbsp;<strong>mathematical, statistical, or computational strategies&nbsp;<\/strong>to problem solving<\/li>\n<li><strong>B4&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013Develop&nbsp;<strong>information literacy&nbsp;<\/strong>to independently research complex issues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>C<\/em><\/strong><em>-Exercise individual and social&nbsp;<strong>responsibilities&nbsp;<\/strong>through the following three outcomes:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>C1&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013Develop&nbsp;and&nbsp;engage&nbsp;in&nbsp;<strong>civic knowledge and responsibilities<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>C2&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013Develop&nbsp;and&nbsp;exercise&nbsp;<strong>global responsibilities<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>C3&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 Develop&nbsp;and&nbsp;exercise&nbsp;<strong>diversity and inclusion responsibilities<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>D<\/em><\/strong><em>\u2013<strong>Integrate and apply&nbsp;<\/strong>abilities and capacities developed under each of the 3 above areas, adapting them to new settings, questions, and responsibilities<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>D1&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013Demonstrate&nbsp;the ability to&nbsp;synthesize&nbsp;multiple knowledge perspectives, competencies and responsibilities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>G<\/em><\/strong><em>\u2013<strong>Grand Challenge \u2013&nbsp;<\/strong>Exploration of multiple perspectives of areas of contemporary significance, including their ethical implications<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>G&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013At least one course must have the \u201cG\u201d designation for Grand Challenge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>General education consists of 40 credits.&nbsp;Each of the twelve outcomes (A1-D1) must be met by at least 3 credits.&nbsp;&nbsp;A single course may meet more than one&nbsp;outcome, but cannot be double counted towards the 40 credit total.&nbsp;&nbsp;At least one course must be a Grand Challenge (G designation).
