You will use your form to schedule a visa interview at the United States embassy or consulate in your country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Requirements for F-1 Visa<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th>&nbsp;<\/th><th>F-1 Visa<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><th>Source of Funding<\/th><td>Supported by personal\/family funds, outside funds, or a combination of both<\/td><\/tr><tr><th>Proof of Funding<\/th><td>Student must show URI and the U.S. consulate proof of sufficient funding for his or her first year of study<\/td><\/tr><tr><th>Off-Campus Employment<\/th><td>Two types of employment authorization available for students who have completed one academic year of full-time enrollment in the U.S.: Curricular Practical Training (CPT) for working off campus during studies. This work authorization is approved one semester at a time. Optional Practical Training (OPT) for working off campus, usually after the completion of studies. This is a 12 month work authorization. Student in STEM fields may be authorized for an additional 24 months.<\/td><\/tr><tr><th>Dependents<\/th><td>Dependents in F-1 status may study part time and are not eligible for employment.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><a class=\"cl-button   prominent\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/global\/coming-to-uri\/visa\/maintaining-your-visa\/\" title=\"\">Maintaining your status<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><a class=\"cl-button  \" href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/us-visas\/study\/student-visa.html\" title=\"\">Additional F-1 Visa Information<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Receive your I-20<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Undergraduate Students<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to receive the Form I-20, you will need to provide the following information and documents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Proof of Funding, a PDF of a recent bank statement, a government issued financial guarantee, or an athletic scholarship. To receive the I-20, your document must prove that you possess funds for the first year of study, and that the funds for subsequent years will be available.<\/li><li>A copy of the biographical page on your passport.<\/li><li>A mailing address and telephone number.<\/li><li>A letter of admission to URI.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Graduate Students<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You will need to provide the following information and documents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Proof of Funding or a PDF of a bank statement that is valid within 30 days of issuance. If you were offered an assistantship, please submit the assistantship contract as financial proof.<\/li><li>A copy of the biographical page on your passport and those of any dependents who will be joining you in the US.<\/li><li>Your full home country address<\/li><li>A copy of your URI admission e-mail. You can just forward this to us.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pay Your SEVIS Fee and Schedule Your Visa Interview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All new international students will need to pay the SEVIS fee and schedule a visa interview. After receiving your I-20, be sure to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Read and confirm the information appearing on the form. If you find errors, please&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:issoff@etal.uri.edu\">e-mail the Office of International Students and Scholars<\/a>&nbsp;to request a new document before going to your appointment.<\/li><li>Print, sign and date the form, at the bottom of page 1. Read the DHS instructions on page 2. This page explains your legal responsibilities as an F-1 recipient.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmjfee.com\/i901fee\/index.html\">Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee.<\/a><\/li><li>Find the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usembassy.gov\/\">nearest U.S. Embassy or consular post<\/a>&nbsp;that has jurisdiction over your visa application and request a visa interview.<\/li><li>Examine your passport before going to your visa appointment. The passport must be valid for at least six months into the future.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Important<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not attempt to enter the US more than 30 days prior to the program start date noted on the I-20 form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visa Interview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The appointment will be in English, not in your native language. Be prepared to demonstrate that you are entering the US with the sole intent of obtaining a degree or participating in training. Be prepared to demonstrate that you have strong ties in your home country, and that you intend to return home. Do not enter the US on a B-1\/B-2 visa with the expectation to change to an F-1 or J-1 once in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Documents You Must Take to the Visa Interview<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Two passport-size photos<\/li><li>I-20 form from URI<\/li><li>Receipt of SEVIS I-901 payment<\/li><li>Letter of admission to URI<\/li><li>Financial sponsorship letter (if sponsored by U.S. government agency, own government, other agency)<\/li><li>Bank statement in your name, letters of credit, proof of anticipated assets if your support is from personal and\/or family funds<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Documents Required at the Point of Entry (airport, border)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Passport<\/li><li>I-20 form (a printed copy)<\/li><li>Letter of academic admission<\/li><li>Proof of financial responsibility<\/li><li>Upon arrival, a US Customs and Border Protection Officer will review all your documents and ask you specific questions regarding your stay in the US.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your passport will be stamped with the notation F-1 and duration of stay (D\/S). Your two index fingers will be scanned by an inkless device and a photograph of your face will be taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Report to Office of International Student and Scholars<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The University of Rhode Island must report your arrival to the Department of Homeland Security.
