{"id":688,"date":"2018-05-31T14:06:08","date_gmt":"2018-05-31T18:06:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/global\/?page_id=688"},"modified":"2024-01-22T09:07:58","modified_gmt":"2024-01-22T14:07:58","slug":"employment","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/global\/office-of-international-students-and-scholars\/current-students-and-scholars\/employment\/","title":{"rendered":"Employment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"type-intro fullwidth\">Unauthorized employment is a violation of your immigration status and has serious implications for your ability to remain in the United States.&nbsp; It&#8217;s important that all students and scholars understand the employment options they are permitted under their status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"type-intro fullwidth\">Employment is defined as any type of work or service in exchange for money, tuition, food, room, or other form of compensation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">On-Campus Employment<\/h1>\n\n\n<div class=\"cl-wrapper cl-card-wrapper\"><a class=\"cl-card   right\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/career\/handshake\/\" title=\"\"><div class=\"cl-card-container text\"><div class=\"cl-card-text\"><h2>On-Campus Jobs<\/h2><p>The Center for Career and Experiential Education has links to on-campus job postings and tips for job searching.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"cl-card-container button\">Job Search<\/div><\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Students in F-1 or J-1 status are permitted work on campus for up to 20 hours per week during the semester and full time during vacation periods.&nbsp; &nbsp;On-campus employment includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Employment on the URI campus for a URI department, office, or facility:&nbsp;examples include graduate assistantship, employment at the library, dining halls, fitness center<\/li><li>Employment at a commercial firm that provides services to students:&nbsp;<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">examples include the Dunkin&#8217; Donuts in the Memorial Union, concession stands at the Ryan Center<\/span><\/li><li>&nbsp;Employment that is located at a remote location, but paid by URI: examples include field research conducted off campus<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"cl-wrapper cl-card-wrapper\"><a class=\"cl-card   right\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/global\/coming-to-uri\/settling-in\/employment\/tax-information\/\" title=\"\"><div class=\"cl-card-container text\"><div class=\"cl-card-text\"><h2>Federal and State Taxes<\/h2><p>Understand tax requirements for international students and scholars and access resources to help you complete your tax paperwork.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"cl-card-container button\">Tax Information<\/div><\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who work on campus will need to apply for a <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/global\/coming-to-uri\/settling-in\/social-security-drivers-license\/\">Social Security Number<\/a>.&nbsp; International students are not eligible for jobs designated as &#8220;work study&#8221;.&nbsp; If you have questions about what constitutes on-campus employment, please <a href=\"mailto:issoff@etal.uri.edu\">contact OISS<\/a> to clarify before starting work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Documentation Required for On-Campus Employment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All international students, researchers, professors, and post-docs go through the same employment process at URI. If you have been offered employment in any form by a URI department, please consult your department administrator to receive information on the steps you must follow to complete the human resources and payroll requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All international students and scholars who will be paid by URI will need to complete <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/controller\/foreign_national_tax_compliance\/\">tax paperwork<\/a> at the time of hiring.&nbsp; Please e-mail&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:foreigntax@etal.uri.edu\">foreigntax@etal.uri.edu<\/a>&nbsp;to set up an appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Off-Campus Employment<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>F-1 and J-1 students are not permitted to work off campus without authorization.&nbsp;Unauthorized off-campus employment &#8212; including private tutoring, babysitting, ride-share driving, or working &#8220;under the table&#8221; in a restaurant &#8212; is a violation of status.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>F-1 students can be authorized for off-campus employment through Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT), or Severe Economic Hardship.&nbsp; J-1 students can be authorized for off-campus employment through Academic Training.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>J-1 student-interns can work a full workload (35 hours) and receive wages at URI locations and\/or affiliated employers only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">F-1&nbsp; Off-Campus Employment Authorization<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"cl-wrapper cl-card-wrapper\"><a class=\"cl-card  \" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/global\/international-students\/employment\/optional-practical-training\/\" title=\"\"><div class=\"cl-card-container text\"><div class=\"cl-card-text\"><h2>Optional Practical Training<\/h2><p>OPT allows you to work for practical training that is directly related to your major area of study.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"cl-card-container button\">OPT<\/div><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"cl-wrapper cl-card-wrapper\"><a class=\"cl-card  \" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/global\/international-students\/employment\/curricular-practical-training\/\" title=\"\"><div class=\"cl-card-container text\"><div class=\"cl-card-text\"><h2>Curricular Practical Training<\/h2><p>Curricular Practical Training permits you to participate in training required by your program.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"cl-card-container button\">CPT<\/div><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"cl-wrapper cl-card-wrapper\"><a class=\"cl-card  \" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/global\/international-students\/employment\/severe-economic-hardship\/\" title=\"\"><div class=\"cl-card-container text\"><div class=\"cl-card-text\"><h2>Severe Economic Hardship<\/h2><p>If your financial situation has changed unexpectedly you may be eligible to apply for Economic Hardship.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"cl-card-container button\">Instructions<\/div><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-boxout-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-boxout  \"><h1>Employment Opportunities<\/h1><p>Browse job opportunities through RhodyNet, URI&#8217;s online career platform.
