{"id":2369,"date":"2026-09-16T13:05:54","date_gmt":"2026-09-16T17:05:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gravity\/?p=2369"},"modified":"2026-09-16T13:08:30","modified_gmt":"2026-09-16T17:08:30","slug":"four-u2grc-students-awarded-nasa-space-grants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gravity\/four-u2grc-students-awarded-nasa-space-grants\/","title":{"rendered":"Four U2GRC Students Awarded NASA Space Grants"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U<sup>2<\/sup>GRC members Morgan Nathan, Haley Gonnella, Genevieve Payne, and Jean Staubley have been awarded NASA Rhode Island Space Grant Graduate Fellowships to support their research efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Genevieve and Jean each received support for this summer, giving them the opportunity to spend it conducting research full-time. Genevieve, who will be starting as a graduate student this fall, worked with Professor Rob Coyne on adapting a signal processing technique called the Q-transform from gravitational wave astronomy to automatically measure variance in gamma ray bursts. Meanwhile, Jean, a rising undergraduate junior, used her fellowship to support her work with Professor Deborah Ferguson on studying the accuracy limitations of numerical relativity simulations of binary black hole mergers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Haley, who is beginning the second year of her PhD with Professor Derek Davis, received fellowship support for the upcoming fall semester to study how the performance of the LIGO gravitational-wave detectors affects astrophysical analysis of LIGO data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Morgan will be using the fellowship in the spring semester to work on her Master\u2019s thesis, titled \u201cMulti-messenger Constraints on Neutron Star Matter from Merger and Post-Merger Observations.\u201d Her thesis research is a multi-messenger study of neutron star mergers across two complementary timescales: merger studies and post-merger electromagnetic emissions; the studies will use information supplemented mostly by gamma-ray burst precursors, alongside gravitational-wave data, to investigate neutron star behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NASA Rhode Island Space Grants are competitive fellowships that provide funding to strong candidates with compelling research proposals.
