GSO at the 2024 OSM Meeting

The URI GSO community presented its research at the 2024 Ocean Sciences Meeting (OSM) in New Orleans, Louisiana. #OSM24, the flagship conference for the ocean sciences and the larger ocean-connected community took place from February 18-23, 2024.

Every two years, OSM convenes to unify the ocean community to share findings, connect scientists from around the world, and advance the impact of science.

Over 130 sessions and posters featuring work from the GSO and the Bay Campus community were presented at the meeting. The table (below) highlights the incredible presence GSO had at OSM.

URI kicked off OSM with spotlight on environmental justice

URI professor Kendall Moore and GSO’s Inner Space Center delivered the meeting’s opening presentation, using the platform to include and elevate local voices.

Moore and her team created an immersive experience featuring storytellers, live music, and elements of documentary film to bring attention to urgent environmental problems affecting communities in Louisiana. The session — Water Tells Stories Through People — which Moore describes as “living documentary,” was presented to an audience of 6,000 oceanographers from across the globe.

Ecosystems ecologist Wally Fulweiler, a GSO alumnus (M.S. ’03, Ph.D. ’07), also delivered a plenary on nitrogen fixation.

GSO booth in the exhibition hall

GSO’s innovations and contributions to ocean science and exploration were showcased at booth #319 in the meeting’s exhibition hall. Here, we networked with prospective students, postdocs and faculty and represented our work to companies from all facets of the industry, including academia, research, government, technology, equipment and instrumentation, and data storage/sharing.

GSO Reception

A special reception for was held for GSO students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends on Wednesday, February 21 at The Chicory, in New Orleans. Thanks to the 70+ people who gathered on behalf of GSO for this special event!
