“How can risk be better characterized and the ability to forecast geohazards like mega-earthquakes, tsunamis, undersea landslides, and volcanic eruptions be improved?”
Ongoing development and deployment of new technologies has:
1) improved understanding of the processes that generate geohazards,
2) refined probabilistic estimates of danger, and
3) reduced the lag between event detection and response.
In this vein, researchers will continue to study the sediment record, morphology of the seafloor, and stratigraphy of the subseafloor to gain insights into the history of infrequent, dangerous events.
