Students will join us on the Bay Campus in Narragansett, Rhode Island.<\/p>\n\n\n<section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-notice-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-notice\" data-hash=\"47cda18f287539713a171275be2f00ec\"><h1>SURFO 2026<\/h1>\n\n<p>SURFO 2026 is contingent on a pending NSF proposal. Registration will open once we hear back from NSF. Please check back periodically, or leave your email address below. students with extensive research experience such as REU should not apply.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Preference is given to rising sophomores and juniors, but others are welcome to apply.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>URI students cannot participate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Apply<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To apply, we request a 1-page statement explaining why you want to join the 2025 SURFO program; Summer Fellows may be involved in projects related to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Physical, Biological, Chemical, or Geological Oceanography<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Geophysics\/Geodynamics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Population Genetics \/ Biodiversity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Geobiology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Atmospheric Chemistry\/Meteorology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remote Sensing\/Ocean Engineering<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Our program emphasizes the quantitative aspects of Oceanography, so many&nbsp;student projects involve fluid dynamics, marine geophysics, or numerical\/physical modeling. We offer a select number of students the experience of working as part of a research group in developing problem-solving skills which may be applied in any career. More specifically, we want to share our enthusiasm for Oceanography with undergraduate students and make them aware that training in the basic sciences or engineering is both applicable and necessary for the complex challenges facing oceanographic research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The three basic goals of the SURFO program are to provide participants with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>an appreciation for the interdisciplinary character of Oceanography,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an authentic research experience in a cutting-edge field of Oceanography,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an introduction to the graduate student lifestyle in Oceanography.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"history\">History of SURFO<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships in Oceanography (SURFO) Program began in 1985. Initial funding came from the Office of Naval Research (ONR). In 1994, support for the program switched to the National Science Foundation (NSF) when SURFO&nbsp;was designated a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/crssprgm\/reu\/reu_search.jsp\">Research Experience for Undergraduates<\/a> (Site-REU) program. SURFO&nbsp;has grown to be an important part of GSO\u2019s research and educational endeavors.
