How have ocean biogeochemical and physical processes contributed to today\u2019s climate and its variability, and how will this system change over the next century?<\/strong><\/em><\/h1>\n

Over the past century, the ocean has absorbed about one-third of excess CO2 emitted from fossil fuel combustion and over 90% of the excess energy of global warming. This has precipitated change in: 1) distribution of temperature and salinity, 2) ocean circulation and heat transport, 3) decreasing pH of seawater, and 4) expansion of low-oxygen zones.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
