autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"program\">Program Outcomes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The primary goal of the SURFO Program is aimed at attracting and retaining undergraduates into professional careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.<br>The secondary goal is to expose students to the field of Oceanography as a potential career opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A tertiary goal is to pair students with faculty in graduate school at oceanographic institutions, especially GSO\/URI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, the SURFO Program has been very successful in achieving these goals, as indicated by the brief list of summary statistics presented below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Over 360 SURFO participants since 1985 (~9-13 each year).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>59% of past&nbsp;SURFOs attended graduate school in a&nbsp;MS program and&nbsp;38% obtained a PhD degree.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1-2 of the SURFOs from each year attend graduate school at GSO.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>~60% of the SURFO participants are female.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"publications\">Publications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>SURFO participants and their advisors are encouraged to publish the results of their summer research in peer-reviewed journals.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"724\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-4-1024x724.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-183660\" style=\"width:367px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-4-1024x724.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-4-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-4-100x72.jpg 100w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-4-768x543.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-4-364x257.jpg 364w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-4-500x353.jpg 500w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-4-1000x707.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-4-1280x904.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/1-4.jpg 1302w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">2023 SURFO Roman F. presented his research project at the 2024 Ocean Sciences Meeting in New Orleans with faculty advisor Kelton McMahon &amp; student mentor Katrina Nowakowski.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>All SURFO papers generated at the end of each summer session are published in a <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/916\/SURFO-Technical-Reports-1.pdf\">GSO Technical Report<\/a>.
