When this system is finished, it will enable routine environmental profiling and sampling of the entire water column everywhere in the ocean for the first time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">Members of our research group have also developed a variety of tools for study of life in extreme environments. These include<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"full-width\">\n<p class=\"paragraph_style\">Experimental methods for quantifying the production of radiolytic H2 in saturated sediment and minerals (Sauvage et al., in preparation).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"full-width\">\n<p class=\"paragraph_style\">A method for quantifying rates of water radioloysis and chemical production (O2 and H2O2) near interfaces between fluids and radionuclide-containing solids (Dzaugis et al., 2015,&nbsp;<span class=\"style_1\">Radiation Physics and Chemistry<\/span>).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"full-width\">\n<p class=\"paragraph_style\">A method for determining&nbsp;<span class=\"style_1\">in situ<\/span>&nbsp;porewater concentrations of dissolved inorganic carbon and alkalinity using shipboard measurements from recovered cores (Sauvage et al., 2014,&nbsp;<span class=\"style_1\">Chemical Geology<\/span>).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"full-width\">\n<p class=\"paragraph_style\">A method for using natural gamma core-logging to quantify uranium, thorium and potassium concentrations in marine sediment (<a title=\"http:\/\/www.iodp.org\/sd15-2013-toc\" href=\"http:\/\/www.iodp.org\/sd15-2013-toc\">Dunlea et al., 2013<\/a>,&nbsp;<span class=\"style_1\">Scientific Drilling<\/span>).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"full-width\">\n<p class=\"paragraph_style\">A numerical approach for quantifying rates of chemical reactions in deep marine sediments (<a title=\"Technical_Developments_files\/Wang et al 2008.pdf\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gso.uri.edu\/dhondtlab\/Technical_Developments_files\/Wang%20et%20al%202008.pdf\">Wang et al 2008.pdf<\/a>,&nbsp;<span class=\"style_1\">Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta<\/span>)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"full-width\">\n<p class=\"paragraph_style\">A method for consistently separating microbial cells from their marine sedimentary matrix (<a title=\"Technical_Developments_files\/Kallmeyer et al 2008.pdf\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gso.uri.edu\/dhondtlab\/Technical_Developments_files\/Kallmeyer%20et%20al%202008.pdf\">Kallmeyer et al 2008.pdf<\/a>,&nbsp;<span class=\"style_1\">Limnology and Oceanography: Methods<\/span>).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"full-width\">\n<p class=\"paragraph_style\">A method for quantifying rates of hydrogen production by water radiolysis in sedimentary environments (<a title=\"Technical_Developments_files\/Blair et al AST 2007.pdf\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gso.uri.edu\/dhondtlab\/Technical_Developments_files\/Blair%20et%20al%20AST%202007.pdf\">Blair et al 2007.pdf<\/a>,&nbsp;<span class=\"style_1\">Astrobiology<\/span>).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"full-width\">\n<p class=\"paragraph_style\">An assay for quantifying extremely low levels of hydrogenase activity (<a title=\"Technical_Developments_files\/Soffientino et al 2006.pdf\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gso.uri.edu\/dhondtlab\/Technical_Developments_files\/Soffientino%20et%20al%202006.pdf\">Soffientino et al 2006.pdf<\/a>,&nbsp;<span class=\"style_1\">Journal of Microbiological Methods<\/span>).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_1\">Students and post-docs who worked on these projects were co-advised by D\u2019Hondt and Arthur Spivack, David Smith or Richard W. Murray (Boston University).
