{"id":181749,"date":"2023-07-24T13:04:33","date_gmt":"2023-07-24T17:04:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/?page_id=181749"},"modified":"2025-08-14T13:12:04","modified_gmt":"2025-08-14T17:12:04","slug":"south-ferry-road-water-monitoring","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/south-ferry-road-water-monitoring\/","title":{"rendered":"South Ferry Road Water Monitoring"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The 2025 monitoring season for URI Watershed Watch is underway, and the Bay Campus community is participating for the fourth year by taking samples at the beach on South Ferry Road.<\/h2>\n<p>In Rhode Island, two groups of bacteria are monitored to indicate the presence of human sewage and associated pathogens, or disease causing organisms &#8211; <em>fecal coliforms <\/em>(indicator for shellfishing) and <em>enterococci<\/em> (indicator for swimming).<\/p>\n<p>People (and pets) can get sick from swimming in, swallowing, or eating shellfish harvested in polluted water. Dutch Island, Jamestown, and the Jamestown Bridge may be seen in the distance. This is a multi-use site for swimming, fishing, boating, and windsurfing. The site is adjacent to the URI Graduate School of Oceanography. Parking is available.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-boxout-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-boxout  \"><h1>Volunteers Needed<\/h1><p>Bay Campus community volunteers are needed to take water samples on Wednesday mornings and deliver them to the URI Watershed Watch Lab on main campus by noon.
