{"id":154431,"date":"2020-01-07T13:25:13","date_gmt":"2020-01-07T18:25:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/?p=154431"},"modified":"2020-01-07T14:03:27","modified_gmt":"2020-01-07T19:03:27","slug":"gathering-copepods-arctic-mosaic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/news\/gathering-copepods-arctic-mosaic\/","title":{"rendered":"MOSAiC Update: Gathering copepods from beneath the Arctic ice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GSO marine research scientist Robert Campbell is in the middle of his two-month leg of the 13-month long MOSAiC expedition\u2014the largest Arctic science expedition in history. Nearly 600 participants from 19 different countries are gathering urgently needed data as they drift with the Arctic ice aboard the research icebreaker&nbsp;<em>Polarstern<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Campbell\u2019s National Science Foundation-funded research was the focus of a <a href=\"https:\/\/follow.mosaic-expedition.org\/blog\/mosaic_2-1-20\/?lang=en\">recent entry<\/a> in the daily MOSAiC blog. Under the cover of the polar night\u2019s 24-hour darkness, Campbell is collecting copepods\u2014a species of tiny drifting organisms called zooplankton\u2014to learn more about their lifecycle.<\/p>\n<p>From the blog post:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2026he looks for \u2018ripe\u2019 females\u2014individuals with eggs developing inside their body, which seem to be ready to release eggs\u2014and incubates them. It is early in the season, so most females do not yet have developing eggs and instead are in a state of hibernation called \u2018diapause\u2019 living off their stored fat (lipid) reserves. He found twelve \u2018ripe\u2019 females out of hundreds of copepods called <em>Calanus hyperboreus<\/em> caught with the nets, and three of them already released clutches of 200-400 eggs each.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The next step for Campbell\u2019s research is to follow the development of these eggs to determine how many are viable and how long it takes them to develop to their first feeding stage.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll share more updates from Campbell and other GSO scientists participating in MOSAiC as we receive them.
