The rate at which heterotrophic protistan grazers consume microbial prey and recycle organic matter is an important factor that influences marine microbial food webs and carbon cycling. At deep-sea hydrothermal vents, chemosynthetic bacteria and archaea form the base of a food web that functions in the absence of sunlight, but the role of protistan grazers in these highly productive ecosystems is largely unexplored. Here, I will present findings from paired grazing incubations and molecular surveys and address the ecological significance of protists at deep-sea hydrothermal vents. In addition to quantifying protistan predation pressure, these results highlight the impact that the protist community has on deep-sea carbon cycling.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Microbial eukaryotes (or protists) in marine ecosystems are a link between microbial primary producers and all higher trophic levels.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1726,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[3121,2696],"tags":[2702,981,2705],"class_list":["post-169128","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-bionoon","category-videos","tag-bio-at-noon","tag-events","tag-recorded-events"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/169128","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1726"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=169128"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/169128\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":169143,"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/169128\/revisions\/169143"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=169128"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=169128"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=169128"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
