The first Earth Day in 1970 gave a voice to an emerging public consciousness about the state of our planet, and today it is marked by more than a billion people each year. Below we\u2019ve compiled a list of different ways you can take part in the build-up to Earth Day 2021! With plenty of options from GSO and others in Rhode Island and beyond, you\u2019ll find numerous live virtual events, kids\u2019 activities, things to do and things to catch up on in case you missed it (or ICYMI for short). Happy Earth Week!<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Monday April 19<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>For kids<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Perfect for K-3 students, check out the now-classic coloring and activity book, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crmc.ri.gov\/education\/DWTWI_ActivityBook.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Down Where the Water Is: A Coastal Awareness Activity Book<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from GSO and the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>ICYMI:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After a host of recent virtual screenings, the documentary <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Frozen Obsession<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will be <a href=\"https:\/\/northwestpassageproject.org\/2021\/04\/10\/frozen-obsession-broadcasts-on-pbs\/\">broadcast on PBS stations<\/a> across the country or viewed online at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/video\/frozen-obsession-nsbaqw\/\">PBS.org<\/a>. The documentary, shot in 4K, follows the 18-day, 2,000-mile <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/northwestpassageproject.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Northwest Passage Project <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">expedition through the stunningly beautiful and extreme Canadian Arctic aboard the Swedish research icebreaker Oden.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Things to do:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Check out the new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mariners.neracoos.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mariners\u2019 Dashboard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from NERACOOS (Northeastern Regional Association of Coastal Ocean Observing Systems), an improved way to visualize regional ocean data where you can now find current ocean conditions, observations, hindcasts, and forecasts all within a single dashboard.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tuesday April 20<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>For Kids:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">R.I. Resource Recovery has a fun <a href=\"http:\/\/rhodeislandresource.recycle.game\/\">Ready, Set, Sort!<\/a> game to help you learn how to dispose of your stuff here in Rhode Island.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;As you play, you\u2019ll learn if items can be recycled in your bin or cart, added to your home compost bin, dropped-off locally, or simply put in the trash. The more you play, the more you\u2019ll learn how to keep valuable resources out of R.I.\u2019s Central Landfill.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>ICYMI:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For those with a passion for the sea and considering a degree in ocean science, you might be wondering what you can do in this line of work. Good news: there\u2019s a rich variety of options! <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/outreach\/ocean-classroom\/ocean-classroom-live\/ocean-classroom-live-season-1\/navigating-your-ocean-science-career-episode-17\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Watch a recent conversation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with three GSO alums and learn about the three very different paths that they took in their ocean science careers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Things to do:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As part of its 60th anniversary, GSO and the URI Arts and Culture Program are hosting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ocean View<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an art exhibition and competition that includes artworks in all media from 25 area professional artists and a youth art competition with more than 200 artworks by Rhode Island K-12 students exploring the many ways in which we are all connected to the ocean. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/outreach\/art\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Learn more<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> about how you can visit the gallery in person this Thursday and Friday, or see all of the artwork on our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/outreach\/art\/gallery\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">virtual gallery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wednesday April 21<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>Live events:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Large Marine Ecosystem (LME) Definitive Volume &#8211; Launch Event<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">8 a.m. ET<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The world\u2019s Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs) are located in the most highly productive areas of the oceans along the margins of the continents. They produce 80% of the annual global marine fishery\u2019s landings and contribute an estimated $27.7 trillion in ecosystem services each year to the global economy. Celebrate the importance of ecosystem-based management by joining the April 21 launch of the Large Marine Ecosystem Definitive Volume eBook, featuring the Coastal Resource Center\u2019s director J.P. Walsh. Hear from Thibodeau speak about the project and Narragansett Bay&#8217;s plankton history. Hosted by the North Kingstown Free Library. The event is free but <a href=\"https:\/\/nklibrary.libcal.com\/event\/7656307?hs=a\">registration is required<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>For kids<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Oceanography in a Mug<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NOAA has some tasty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/education\/photos-images\/oceanography-in-mug\">try-this-at-home activities<\/a> that show the physics and chemistry at work in both the ocean and your favorite mug of cocoa&#8230;or tea&#8230;or coffee. Which ocean sampling tools bear a striking resemblance to kitchen gadgets? Can you generate upwelling in your hot cocoa? They\u2019ll cover all of this and more. So pour yourself a cup, and start learning!&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>ICYMI:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All ocean life is linked through what it eats and what eats it. These food chains combine into an interconnected marine food web. But what role do humans play in these complex webs? Join GSO student Kristin Huizenga and postdoctoral fellow Matthew Ramirez in this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/outreach\/ocean-classroom\/ocean-classroom-live\/ocean-classroom-live-season-2\/food-webs-from-plankton-to-you\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">recent Ocean Classroom (Live!) episode<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as they discuss the interwoven world of marine food webs\u2014everything from microscopic plankton, lobsters, sea turtles\u2026to you!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Things to do:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">April is Citizen Science Month, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scistarter.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SciStarter has a big list of opportunities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for anyone who\u2019d like to participate in scientific research, either in-person or virtually. This website offers thousands of opportunities for you to turn your curiosity into impact. Join a project or event from wherever you are to help scientists answer questions they cannot answer without you. If you are are interested in a a local opportunity to monitor water quality through a URI lab check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/watershedwatch\/getting-involved\/become-a-volunteer\/\">URI Watershed Watch Program<\/a>. This 30 plus year program&nbsp; has 250 sites throughout the state and also nearby in CT and MA. Right now is when they are looking for additional monitors for the season. The local Surfriders Foundation works through URI Watershed Watch for their monitoring.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thursday April 22 (Earth Day!)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>Live events:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">GSO Student-Alum Networking Series: Sarah Fuller<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">3:30 p.m. ET<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For this third talk in a new lecture series, all are welcome to hear from GSO Sarah Fuller who will discuss her career path so far. Fuller, the Operations Manager for Wood Hole Oceanographic Institution\u2019s Shipboard Scientific Services Group in Woods Hole, Mass., will talk on \u201cField Work to Field Support &#8211; A Career in Supporting Academia.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/events.uri.edu\/event\/student-alum_networking_series_sarah_fuller\">Details and link to the event<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>For kids<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The National Ocean Service created <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/education\/discoverclimate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ten Activities to Introduce You to the Essential Principles of Climate Science<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a free activity book that helps you learn about Earth&#8217;s climate system, the factors that drive and change it, the impacts of those changes, and what you can do to explore, understand, and protect our Earth. Download the full activity book or individual activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>ICYMI:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you missed last year\u2019s Charles and Marie Fish Lecture, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/videos\/fish-lecture-2020-ian-urbina\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">watch the archived presentation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from journalist Ian Urbina, author of \u201cThe Outlaw Ocean\u201d which draws on five years of perilous and intrepid reporting, often hundreds of miles from shore.
