{"id":178668,"date":"2022-11-10T16:29:18","date_gmt":"2022-11-10T21:29:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/?p=178668"},"modified":"2022-11-10T16:29:18","modified_gmt":"2022-11-10T21:29:18","slug":"rhode-islanders-strongly-answer-yes-on-question-1-for-improvements-to-uris-narragansett-bay-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gso\/news\/rhode-islanders-strongly-answer-yes-on-question-1-for-improvements-to-uris-narragansett-bay-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"Rhode Islanders strongly answer \u2018yes\u2019 on Question 1 for improvements to URI\u2019s Narragansett Bay Campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Vote provides a $100 million investment in the Bay Campus that will ensure URI and Rhode Island remain leaders in the global Blue Economy<\/h2>\n<h5>Nov. 9, 2022<\/h5>\n<p>Rhode Island voters strongly said they want the University of Rhode Island\u2019s Narragansett Bay Campus to continue being a global center of excellence in ocean science by approving a $100 million bond referendum on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-video-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-video  \"><div class=\"poster\" id=\"PYbHHSR9HFY\" data-video=\"PYbHHSR9HFY\" data-platform=\"youtube\" data-showinfo=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/PYbHHSR9HFY\/maxresdefault.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n<p>With 412 of 414 polling places reporting as of late Tuesday night, 57.5 percent of voters said they support investments that will keep URI and the state of Rhode Island at the forefront of the global Blue Economy. Twenty-nine Rhode Island cities and towns voted to approve Question 1, with support coming from every corner of the state.<\/p>\n<p>Thirteen Rhode Island communities turned in approval percentages above 60 percent, with five exceeding 70 percent approval: Central Falls, 72%; Jamestown, 71%; New Shoreham (Block Island), 75%; Newport, 71%, and Providence, 75%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are grateful to Rhode Islanders for their support of this bond issue,\u201d URI President Marc Parlange said. \u201cAn investment in URI is an investment in our future. Together, we said yes to being leaders in the Blue Economy; yes to creating jobs; yes to research and science that protects the environment; and yes to building a flourishing hub of ideas, partnerships, and programs that will create a stronger economy for all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parlange said the bond will create a thriving, modern Bay Campus that will spur critical job creation and economic development, drive innovation, and create sustainable and equitable career opportunities for all Rhode Islanders.<\/p>\n<p>The Blue Economy\u2014which includes industries related to sustainable, renewable energy; ocean engineering; marine trades; fisheries; tourism; and defense\u2014is a critical driver of the state\u2019s economy, generating more than $5 billion every year. By 2030, that total is projected to double to $10 billion.<\/p>\n<p>A revitalized Bay Campus will have a profound impact on URI, the state\u2019s flagship research institution. The pathbreaking work happening at the Bay Campus attracts more than $50 million in research grants each year to the University. Improved facilities will continue to attract top faculty and students, as well as additional research funding.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to being a center of teaching and research, the Bay Campus is home to a robust community of academic centers, state and federal agencies, nonprofits and nongovernmental organizations, and private companies.
